Abstract

Over the past few decades, in concert with ground-breaking experimental advances, condensed matter theory has drawn increasingly from the language of low-energy quantum field theory. This primer is aimed at elevating graduate students of condensed matter theory to a level where they can engage in independent research. It emphasizes the development of modern methods of classical and quantum field theory with applications oriented around condensed matter physics. Topics covered include second quantization, path and functional field integration, mean-field theory and collective phenomena, the renormalization group, and topology. Conceptual aspects and formal methodology are emphasized, but the discussion is rooted firmly in practical experimental application. As well as routine exercises, the text includes extended and challenging problems, with fully worked solutions, designed to provide a bridge between formal manipulations and research-oriented thinking. This book will complement graduate level courses on theoretical quantum condensed matter physics.

Abstract

This book contains write-ups of lectures from a summer school for advanced graduate students in elementary particle physics. In the first lecture, Scott Willenbrock gives an overview of the standard model of particle physics. This is followed by reviews of specific areas of standard model physics : precision electroweak analysis by James Wells, quantum chromodynamics and jets by George Sterman, and heavy quark effective field by Matthias Neubert. Developments in neutrino physics are discussed by Andre de Gouvea and the theory behind the Higgs boson is addressed by Laura Reina. Collider phenomenology from both experimental and theoretical perspectives are highlighted by Heidi Schellman and Tao Han. A brief survey of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking is provided by R Sekhar Chivukula and Elizabeth H Simmons. Martin Schmaltz covers the recent proposals for "little" Higgs theories. Markus Luty describes what is needed to make supersymmetric theories realistic by breaking supersymmetry. There is an entire series of lectures by Raman Sundrum, Graham Kribs, and Csaba Csaki on extra dimensions. Finally, Keith Olive completes the book with a review of astrophysics.

Abstract

Abstract

The contributions in this volume are written by well-known specialists in the fields of mechanics, materials modeling and analysis. They comprehensively address the core issues and present the latest developments in these and related areas. In particular, the book demonstrates the breadth of current research activity in continuum mechanics. A variety of theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches are reported, covering finite elasticity, vibration and stability, and mechanical modeling. The coverage reflects the extent and impact of the research pursued by Professor Haseganu and h

Abstract

This unique book describes quantum field theory completely within the context of path integrals. With its utility in a variety of fields in physics, the subject matter is primarily developed within the context of quantum mechanics before going into specialized areas.Adding new material keenly requested by readers, this second edition is an important expansion of the popular first edition. Two extra chapters cover path integral quantization of gauge theories and anomalies, and a new section extends the supersymmetry chapter, where singular potentials in supersymmetric systems are described.

Abstract

The pioneering work of Abel and Galois in the early nineteenth century demonstrated that the long-standing quest for a solution of quintic equations by radicals was fruitless: no formula can be found. The techniques they used were, in the end, more important than the resolution of a somewhat esoteric problem, for they were the genesis of modern abstract algebra. This book provides a gentle introduction to Galois theory suitable for third- and fourth-year undergraduates and beginning graduates. The approach is unashamedly unhistorical: it uses the language and techniques of abstract algebra to express complex arguments in contemporary terms. Thus the insolubility of the quintic by radicals is linked to the fact that the alternating group of degree 5 is simple - which is assuredly not the way Galois would have expressed the connection. Topics covered include: rings and fields integral domains and polynomials field extensions and splitting fields applications to geometry finite fields the Galois group equations Group theory features in many of the arguments, and is fully explained in the text. Clear and careful explanations are backed up with worked examples and more than 100 exercises, for which full solutions are provided.
