Abstract

The book is an edited volume from leading research scholars in the field of Operations Research, focusing on future perspectives in OR. Each of the contributors offers their perspective looking forward to the further development of the field. The theme will provide pivotal interest in the book because of prominence of the contributors and Saul Gass' position as one of the founders of OR and his involvement in writing about the history of OR. The history of operations research is of considerable interest and this book takes a pivotal perspective of OR's history by examining current trends and the future of the field.

Abstract

This book, combining analysis and tools from mathematical probability, focuses on a systematic and novel presentation of recent trends in pure and applied mathematics: the emergence of three fields, wavelets, signals and fractals. The unity of basis constructions and their expansions is emphasized as the starting point for the development of bases that are computationally efficient for use in several areas from wavelets to fractals. The book brings together tools from engineering and math, especially from signal- and image processing, and from harmonic analysis and operator theory. The presentation is aimed at graduate students, as well as users from a diverse spectrum of applications. Key features: • A hands-on approach for students, including tutorials and numerous exercises; • Excellent motivation throughout; • New pedagogical features: glossary of terms, their use in mathematics and in engineering, help for cross-audiences, image processing, visual presentation of key algorithms, structure and geometry of big matrix computations, explanation of uses of the theory in applications outside of mathematics; • Includes more than 50 figures with captions, illustrating the main ideas, plus engineering diagrams, graphic renditions of algorithms, and separate illustrations; • Separate sections in the book explain engineering terms to mathematicians, and operator theory to engineers; • Each chapter concludes with a helpful guide to the literature allowing students to follow up on the topics in the book. Palle E.T. Jorgensen is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Iowa. This book is based in part on interdisciplinary courses that he has taught over the last several years, and on his work with his current and former students. His most recent book was written jointly with Ola Bratteli and is entitled Wavelets through a Looking Glass, ©2002 Birkhäuser Boston.

Abstract

Experimentation is necessary - a purely theoretical approach is not reasonable. The new experimentalism, a development in the modern philosophy of science, considers that an experiment can have a life of its own. It provides a statistical methodology to learn from experiments, where the experimenter should distinguish between statistical significance and scientific meaning. This book introduces the new experimentalism in evolutionary computation, providing tools to understand algorithms and programs and their interaction with optimization problems. The book develops and applies statistical techniques to analyze and compare modern search heuristics such as evolutionary algorithms and particle swarm optimization. Treating optimization runs as experiments, the author offers methods for solving complex real-world problems that involve optimization via simulation, and he describes successful applications in engineering and industrial control projects. The book bridges the gap between theory and experiment by providing a self-contained experimental methodology and many examples, so it is suitable for practitioners and researchers and also for lecturers and students. It summarizes results from the author's consulting to industry and his experience teaching university courses and conducting tutorials at international conferences. The book will be supported online with downloads and exercises.

Abstract

This volume contains results gained from the EU-funded 5th Framework project, FLOMANIA (Flow Physics Modelling – An Integrated Approach). 17 European organisations, industry, research, and universities, have collaborated on topics of improvement of existing methods, investigation and integration of differential Reynolds Stress models for aeronautical applications and modelling of detached-eddy simulations (DES). The book presents an introduction to the project, exhibits partners’ methods and approaches, and provides comprehensive reports (i.e. definition as well as results) of all applications treated in the project. Moreover, a complete chapter is devoted to a description of turbulence models used by the partners together with a section on lessons learnt – accompanied by a comprehensive list of references.
