Spectacular observational breakthroughs, particularly by the WMAP satellite, have led to a new epoch of CMB science long after its original discovery. Taking a physical approach, the authors of this volume, which was first published in 2006, probe the problem of the 'darkness' of the Universe: the origin and evolution of dark energy and matter in the cosmos. Starting with the observational background of modern cosmology, they provide an accessible review of this fascinating yet complex subject. Topics discussed include the kinetics of the electromagnetic radiation in the Universe, the ionization history of cosmic plamas, the origin of primordial perturbations in light of the inflation paradigm, and the formation of anisotropy and polarization of the CMB. This fascinating review will be valuable to advanced students and researchers in cosmology.

This publication provides a comprehensive and systematically organized coverage of higher order finite-difference time-domain or FDTD schemes, demonstrating their potential role as a powerful modeling tool in computational electromagnetics. Special emphasis is drawn on the analysis of contemporary waveguide and antenna structures. Acknowledged as a significant breakthrough in the evolution of the original Yee's algorithm, the higher order FDTD operators remain the subject of an ongoing scientific research. Among their indisputable merits, one can distinguish the enhanced levels of accuracy even for coarse grid resolutions, the fast convergence rates, and the adjustable stability. In fact, as the fabrication standards of modern systems get stricter, it is apparent that such properties become very appealing for the accomplishment of elaborate and credible designs.

Feedforward Amplifiers for Wideband Communication Systems has been possible thanks to the research carried out throughout several years in the field of the linearization techniques applied to digital communication systems, particularly to those with high spectral efficient modulation techniques. The wireless telecommunications are more and more demanded for the Information Society. Such requirements are reflected as a great many of communication standards with specific coverage applications and, above all, with higher and higher data transmission rates. The electromagnetic spectrum, nevertheless, is a scarce asset that can not be spread and despite the increasingly tendency to transmit in higher frequencies, the bandwidths assigned to each application are always exploited to the limit. Feedforward Amplifiers for Wideband Communication Systems merges in the need of developing frequency efficient modulations with widespread codification techniques that result in wideband communication systems, with strict regulations in the usable frequency bandwidths and tight restrictions in the spurious emissions over the remaining spectrum. The radio frequency transmitters do not remain impassive to those changes, especially the power amplifiers, which efficiency and linearity directly determines the correct performance of the entire transmission system. The linearity specifications are commonly fixed by the telecommunication standards while the efficiency rates directly strikes the commercial viability of these transmitters. Feedforward Amplifiers for Wideband Communication Systems tries to put into practice the Feedforward linearization technique, aimed at improving either the linearity or efficiency parameters of power amplifiers, just intended for achieving a trade-off between the distortion specifications of the telecommunication standards and the efficiency enhancement of the transmission systems, which set, respectively, the linearity and the output level requirements of power amplifiers. This challenge is enshrined in one of the present wideband communication systems, but all the recommended design guidelines are perfectly reusable in the future wideband applications.

Every three years, the leading experts in detectors for astronomy gather together to exchange information and form professional relationships. This series of meetings is entitled Scientific Detectors for Astronomy. The meeting has been held six times, with the last four publishing hardcover proceedings. Nearly all leading astronomical observatories and manufacturers attend this meeting, with participants from every continent of the world. The 2005 meeting in Taormina, Italy was attended by 127 professionals who develop and use the highest quality detectors for wavelengths from x-ray to sub-mm, with emphasis on optical and infrared detectors. The meeting consisted of overview talks, technical presentations, poster sessions and roundtable discussions. In addition, a strong cultural programme exposed the participants to the host region while fostering the enhancement of professional relationships. These proceedings capture the technical content and the spirit of the 2005 workshop. The 87 papers cover a wide range of detector technologies including CCDs, CMOS, APDs, and sub-mm detectors. There are papers on observatory status and plans, special applications, detector testing and characterization, and electronics. A special feature of these proceedings is the inclusion of pedagogical overview papers, which were written by teams of leading experts from different institutions. These proceedings are appropriate for a range of expertise levels, from undergraduates to professionals working in the field. The information presented in this book will serve as a valuable reference for many years to come. This workshop was organized by the Scientific Workshop Factory, Inc. and the INAF- Osservatorio Astrofisico di Catania.

The book focuses on the practical aspects of computational electrodynamics. A short review of electromagnetic field theory and an illustrative introduction to basic concepts of numerical methods provide the mathematical and physical background. The main part the book guides the reader step-by-step through the modelling process: from the initial "what question shall the model answer?", through the setting up of a computer model by creating geometry, boundary conditions, sources, …, to post processing, validation, and optimization. A number of antenna and filter examples demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of different numerical methods. So the book provides a realistic view on the capabilities and limits of state-of-the-art 3D-field simulators and on how to apply this knowledge efficiently to EM analysis and designing of RF applications in modern communication systems.
