The aim of the present study was to illuminate the experiences of suicidal behaviour in someNorwegian males with long-term drug addiction, and interpret their personal narratives inregards of meaning and communication. Open-ended, in-depth interviews were chosen forcollecting data. A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, based on the ideas of Ricoeurin combination with Labovs structural perspective on personal narratives was used toanalyse the data. This study suggests that the suicidal behaviour is a result of a complex interrelationshipbetween the person himself, the group he is a part of and the society at large. Analysis of thepersonal narratives resulted in six sub-categories. Three main categories were identified: 1.The meaning of being confirmed and attached, 2. The meaning of wishing changes in lifecircumstances and 3. The meaning of choosing between possible solutions". The analysis asa whole formed a theme: "Between death as a solution and dreaming of a life".The suicidal behaviour can be viewed as a speech about the individuals's emotional relationto themselves. How masculinity is constructed has had a great impact on the participant'ssuicidal behaviour, specially their relationship with their father. The participants ownrecourses in life have been associated with a sense of coherence. Non-judgemental attitudesin professional helpers and easy access to acute psychosocial care are of importance from apreventing public health perspective.

Worldwide, at least 1 million people die by suicide each year and many millions more attempt suicide. However, suicide has been increasingly recognised as a preventable problem in many cases. Because of this, and the rising rates of suicide in young people, many countries have established national suicide prevention strategies. These include the United Kingdom, the USA, Scandinavian countries, other countries in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. There is also increasing emphasis on the treatment of suicidal people and those who have made suicide attempts. In order to be effective it is imperative that strategies for treatment and prevention are based on sound scientific evidence. In this book leading figures from psychiatry, psychology, epidemiology, public health, and social medicine bring together the research evidence concerning the key elements in suicide prevention and treatment of suicidal behaviour and translate it into implications for practical action. This includes social and public health policy as well as clinical practice. The book draws together the evidence relevant to treatment and prevention, and uses this in order to highlight the most effective approaches. The range of initiatives covered is wide, reflecting the complex nature of suicide and hence the need for a range of approaches. This book will be an essential source for anyone concerned with the design and implementation of effective suicide prevention strategies, including clinicians working with individual patients, strategic policy makers, and researchers.

One of the world's foremost authorities on the subject, Professor Pape has created the first comprehensive database of every suicide terrorist attack in the world from 1980 until today. Professor Pape uses this unprecedented research to debunk widely held misconceptions about the nature of suicide terrorism and provide a new lens that makes sense of the threat we face. In this wide-ranging analysis, Professor Pape offers the essential tools to forecast when some groups are likely to resort to suicide terrorism, and when they are not. He also provides the first comprehensive demographic profile of modern suicide terrorist attackers. With data from more than 460 such attackers - including the names of 333 - we now know that these individuals are not mainly poor, desperate criminals or uneducated religious fanatics but are often well-educated, middle-class political activists.
