Abstract

Although numerous genomic studies of stroke have examined such factors as stroke inheritance, chromosomal loci of risk, preclinical models of stroke, and differential gene expression of brain injury, repair, and recovery, much work to determine the precise role of gene function in human neurological pathophysiology remains ahead. In Stroke Genomics: Methods and Reviews, leading experts in the field explore the pragmatic application of the tools of genomic and molecular biology research to the treatment of stroke. Providing the reader with cutting-edge reviews of clinical and preclinical genomics, the authors relate changes in gene expression to physiological end points-such as functional imaging paradigms-to produce a more holistic approach in which molecular biology goes hand in hand with stroke pathophysiology. Topics of special interest include stem cell transplantation, gene therapy, clinical gene/gene interaction studies, and cytokine drug discovery. Readily reproducible techniques are provided, along with ancillary methods (imaging, animal models, human genetic study design, and transgenic animal production) that can be effectively applied to gene discovery. The protocols follow the successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, each offering step-by-step laboratory instructions, an introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, lists of the necessary equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and highly practical, Stroke Genomics: Methods and Reviews shows how to successfully design, execute, and interpret preclinical and clinical molecular biological studies of stroke, work that will greatly advance its understanding, as well as rapid development of the next generation of stroke therapeutics.

Abstract

Now in its sixth best-selling edition, The Human Nervous System: Structure and Function continues to combine clear prose with high-quality tailor-made medical illustrations to achieve for neuroscientists and medical students a succinct explanation of the fundamental principles behind the organization, structure, and function of the human nervous system. The distinguished authors take advantage of the many recent advances in neurobiology and molecular biology to include new coverage of such critical discoveries as stem cells, apoptosis, the role of the amygdala in stress, and the significance of dendritic spines. Among the core topics given expanded treatments are pain and pain pathways, the visual system, development and growth of the nervous system, the chemical senses of smell and taste, and the limbic system. There is also fresh material on neuronal stem cells, the auditory and vestibular systems, neurotransmitters as the chemical messengers of certain brain circuits, the cerebellum, and lesions of the spinal nerves, spinal cord, and brainstem. Award-winning medical illustrator Robert J. Demarest has created new and revised legacy illustrations in cooperation with his neuroscientist coauthors, adding 24 figures to the previous 149. His illustrations are designed to extract and visually highlight the essence of the neuroanatomical features embedded in the complexities of the nervous system, thereby allowing the reader to match the structures of the brain with conventional X-ray pictures, and CT, MRI, and PET scans. Highly praised and widely appreciated in its earlier versions, this new 6th edition of The Human Nervous System: Structure and Function incorporates all the latest neuroanatomical discoveries and offers medical students and interested neuroscientists a readily understandable and awe-inspiring view of the organization of the human nervous system. Its explanatory power and visual insight make this book an indispensable source of quick understanding that readers will consult gratefully again and again.

Abstract

The field of neurology is being transformed, from a therapeutically nihilistic discipline with few effective treatments, to a therapeutic specialty which offers new, effective treatments for disorders of the brain and spinal cord. This remarkable transformation has bridged neuroscience, molecular medicine, and clinical investigation, and represents a major triumph for biomedical research. This book, which contains chapters by more than 29 internationally recognized authorities who have made major contributions to neurotherapeutics, tells the stories of how new treatments for disabling disorder

Abstract

The therapeutic options for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurodegenerative and traumatic diseases such as spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, etc. have experienced enormous progress over recent years. Despite these encouraging developments, available therapies are only partially effective, and the ultimate goal is still far from being attained. Improved understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration and demyelination has led to a variety of new therapeutic targets and approaches. In addition to modulation
