Abstract

Proceedings of Geo-Frontiers 2005, held in Austin, Texas, January 24-26, 2005. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 26 papers discussing material characterization, a perennial issue in pavement engineering. Topics include: in situ and laboratory testing of base, subgrade, and asphaltic materials; image analysis, both for characterizing particle shape for aggregates and for assessing compaction of in-place asphalt concrete; environmental aspects of material characterization, including the estimation of partially saturated material properties for soils and the influence of wet-dry cycles on stabilized base materials; modeling of the performance of the overall pavement structure and of the specific materials and layers comprising this structure; testing of geosynthetics and of reinforced pavement layers; modeling of reinforced layers to quantify the benefits of the geosynthetics; and case studies assessing the economic benefits from appropriate usage of geosynthetics in pavements.
