Abstract

This is the first Visual Basic.NET book to provide a comprehensive discussion of the major data structures and algorithms. Here, instead of having to translate material on C++ or Java, the professional or student VB.NET programmer will find a tutorial on how to use data structures and algorithms and a reference for implementation using VB.NET for data structures and algorithms from the .NET Framework Class Library as well as those which must be developed by the programmer. In an object-oriented fashion, the author presents arrays and arraylists, linked lists, hash tables, dictionaries, trees, graphs, sorting and searching as well as more advanced algorithms, such as probabilistic algorithms and dynamic programming. His approach is very practical, for example using timing tests rather than Big O analysis to compare the performance of data structures and algorithms. This book can be used in both beginning and advanced computer programming courses that use the VB.NET language and, most importantly, by the professional VB programmer.

Abstract

The 32nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming (ICALP 2005) was held in Lisbon, Portugal from July 11 to July 15, 2005. These proceedings contain all contributed papers presented at ICALP 2005, - getherwiththepapersbytheinvitedspeakersGiuseppeCastagna(ENS),Leonid Libkin (Toronto), John C. Mitchell (Stanford), Burkhard Monien (Paderborn), and Leslie Valiant (Harvard). The program had an additional invited lecture by Adi Shamir (Weizmann Institute) which does not appear in these proceedings. ICALP is a series of annual conferences of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS). The ?rst ICALP took place in 1972. This year, the ICALP program consisted of the established track A (focusing on algorithms, automata, complexity and games) and track B (focusing on logic, semantics and theory of programming), and innovated on the structure of its traditional scienti?c program with the inauguration of a new track C (focusing on security and cryptography foundation). In response to a call for papers, the Program Committee received 407 s- missions, 258 for track A, 75 for track B and 74 for track C. This is the highest number of submitted papers in the history of the ICALP conferences. The P- gram Committees selected 113 papers for inclusion in the scienti?c program. In particular, the Program Committee for track A selected 65 papers, the P- gram Committee for track B selected 24 papers, and the Program Committee for track C selected 24 papers. All the work of the Program Committees was done electronically.

Abstract

This yearmarks anexciting time in the XML-database space:XQueryis moving closer to becoming a full W3C Recommendation, and the Big 3 database vendors (IBM, Oracle, Microsoft) are expected to release XQuery support in theirrelationalDBMSs,joininganumberofexistingopensourceandcommercial products. Thus, we are very pleased to feature an industrial paper (describing theXML-speci?cfeaturesofMicrosoftSQLServer)aswellas14researchpapers. XSym's focus this year was on building XML repositories, and papers discussed the following topics: indexing support for the evaluation of XPath and XQuery; benchmarks and algorithms for XQuery and XPath evaluation; algorithms for constraint satisfaction checking, information extraction, and subtree matching; and applications of XML in information systems. This year, XSym also coordinated its e?orts with the Database and P- gramming Languages Symposium, DBPL 2005. The resulting program included not only presentations of the papers in this proceedings, but also a joint DBPL- XSym keynote talk by Giuseppe Castagna, developer of the CDuce language for XML processing, and a joint panel on open XML research problems and challenges. The organizers would like to express their gratitude to the XSym Program Committee and external reviewers for their e?orts in providing very thorough evaluationsofthesubmittedpapersundersigni?canttimeconstraintsandto- crosoftfortheirsponsorshipandfortheuseoftheMicrosoftConferenceMana- ment Toolkit. We would also like to thank Gavin Bierman and Christoph Koch, the organizersof DBPL, for their e?orts andtheir willingness to coordinate with us. Abstract

Abstract

This is the fourth volume in a series of books dedicated to basic research in spatial cognition. Spatial cognition is a field that investigates the connection between the physical spatial world and the mental world. Philosophers and researchers have p- posed various views concerning the relation between the physical and the mental worlds: Plato considered pure concepts of thought as separate from their physical manifestations while Aristotle considered the physical and the mental realms as two aspects of the same substance. Descartes, a dualist, discussed the interaction between body and soul through an interface organ and thus introduced a functional view that presented a challenge for the natural sciences and the humanities. In modern psychology, the relation between the physical and the cognitive space has been investigated using thorough experiments, and in artificial intelligence we have seen views as diverse as ‘problems can be solved on a representation of the world’ and ‘a representation of the world is not necessary. ’ Today’s spatial cognition work establishes a correspondence between the mental and the physical worlds by studying and exploiting their interaction; it investigates how mental space and spatial “reality” join together in understanding the world and in interacting with it. The physical and representational aspects are equally important in this work. Almost all topics of cognitive science manifest themselves in spatial cognition.
