The development of new computational techniques and better computing power has made it possible to attack some classical problems of algebraic geometry. The main goal of this book is to highlight such computational techniques related to algebraic curves. The area of research in algebraic curves is receiving more interest not only from the mathematics community, but also from engineers and computer scientists, because of the importance of algebraic curves in applications including cryptography, coding theory, error-correcting codes, digital imaging, computer vision, and many more. This book cove

This work treats an introduction to commutative ring theory and algebraic plane curves, requiring of the student only a basic knowledge of algebra, with all of the algebraic facts collected into several appendices that can be easily referred to, as needed. Kunz's proven conception of teaching topics in commutative algebra together with their applications to algebraic geometry makes this book significantly different from others on plane algebraic curves. The exposition focuses on the purely algebraic aspects of plane curve theory, leaving the topological and analytical viewpoints in the background, with only casual references to these subjects and suggestions for further reading. Most important to this text: * Emphasizes and utilizes the theory of filtered algebras, their graduated rings and Rees algebras, to deduce basic facts about the intersection theory of plane curves * Presents residue theory in the affine plane and its applications to intersection theory * Methods of proof for the Riemann–Roch theorem conform to the presentation of curve theory, formulated in the language of filtrations and associated graded rings * Examples, exercises, figures and suggestions for further study round out this fairly self-contained textbook From a review of the German edition: "[T]he reader is invited to learn some topics from commutative ring theory by mainly studying their illustrations and applications in plane curve theory. This methodical approach is certainly very enlightening and efficient for both teachers and students… The whole text is a real masterpiece of clarity, rigor, comprehension, methodical skill, algebraic and geometric motivation…highly enlightening, motivating and entertaining at the same time… One simply cannot do better in writing such a textbook." —Zentralblatt MATH .

"Thermal Analysis of Polymeric Materials" systematically treats macroscopic measurements by thermal analysis and the quantitative link to microscopic, molecular structure and mobility. Reversible and irreversible thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics, and statistical thermodynamics are the roots of the described thermal analysis. The book aims to broaden readers’ understanding of materials and the connection of flexible macromolecules (polymers) to small molecules and rigid macromolecules (minerals, salts, and metals). An effort is made to discover how the long, flexible molecules fit into their small phases which are characterized as microphases or nanophases. Their order ranges from amorphous to mesophase-like and crystalline. Ultimately, it is shown that the basic structure-property-processing triangle is connected to the better-known types of molecules and their common macroscopic phases.

This volume presents the invited lectures of the workshop "Infinite Dimensional Algebras and Quantum Integrable Systems'' held in July 2003 at the University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal, as a satellite workshop of the XIV. International Congress on Mathematical Physics. Recent developments in the theory of infinite dimensional algebras and their applications to quantum integrable systems are reviewed by some of the leading experts in the field. The volume will be of interest to a broad audience from graduate students to researchers in mathematical physics and related fields. Contributors: E. Frenkel O.A. Castro-Alvaredo and A. Fring V.G. Analyses in the Economics of Aging summarizes a massive amount of new research on several popular and less-examined topics pertaining to the relationship between economics and aging. Among the many themes explored in this volume, considerable attention is given to new research on retirement savings, the cost and efficiency of medical resources, and the predictors of health events. The volume begins with a discussion of the risks and merits of 401(k) plans. Subsequent chapters present recent analysis of the growth of Medicare costs; the different aspects of disability; and the evolution of health, wealth, and living arrangements over the life course. Keeping with the global tradition of previous volumes, Analyses in the Economics of Aging also includes comparative studies on savings behavior in Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States; an examination of household savings among different age groups in Germany; and a chapter devoted to population aging and the plight of widows in India. Carefully compiled and containing some of the most cutting-edge research and analysis available, this volume should be of interest to any specialist or policymaker concerned with ongoing changes in savings and retirement behaviors.
