Abstract

The decision to source software development to an overseas firm (offshoring) is looked at frequently in simple economic terms - it's cheaper, and skilled labor is easier to find. In practice, however, offshoring is fraught with difficulties. As well as the considerable challenge of controlling projects at a distance, there are differences in culture, language, business methods, politics, and many other issues to contend with. Nevertheless, as many firms have discovered, the benefits of getting it right are too great to ignore. This book explains everything you need to know to put offshoring into practice, avoid the pitfalls, and develop effective working relationships. It covers a comprehensive range of the important offshoring issues: from ROI to strategy, from SLA to culture, from country comparisons to provider marketing. Written for CTOs, CIOs, consultants, and other IT executives, this book is also an excellent introduction to sourcing for business students.

Abstract

Managers across the world are beating a path to India because it is the global leader for offshore IT-enabled services. Many corporate leaders seek to reduce their costs, other wish to improve service quality, but not many understand India on their first visit and some are confused by clashes of culture. This book aims to introduce India, the major players in the Indian service industry, the reasons why you should utilise India as an offshore outsourcing destination and the steps you need to take to find and work with a local partner. The second edition has been completely revised with up-to-date information on the latest industry developments. Several chapters have been entirely restructured and two completely new chapters deal with the risks of outsourcing to India and the future prospects for the industry. "Kobayashi-Hillary conducts a much more thorough tour of the hoops a company must jump through to establish an India operation... Well-structured." Edward Luce, Financial Times "Mark Kobayashi-Hillary has offered a balanced view on the trend to outsource to India. He makes a compelling economic case for outsourcing to this region while acknowledging and discussing the emotive aspects of such a decision." Kiran Karnik, President of NASSCOM "Offshore outsourcing raises many challenges which - should you follow his advice - may nevertheless be pragmatically managed." Nigel Roxburgh, Co-founder European Outsourcing Association.
