Une centaine de photographies, mais aussi quelques dessins et caricatures, évoquent le regard que le photographe portait sur lui-même à l'apparition du médium. Objet de curiosité, de ridicule voire de mépris, il devient rapidement une figure publique, dont le rôle accompagne l'essor industriel du médium. Confrontant images privées issues de pratiques amateurs et images commerciales, portraits psychologiques et caricatures, l'exposition est, à travers le photographe, l'occasion de voir comment la photographie elle-même s'est envisagée à ses débuts. - Victor Hugo par lui-même : une quinzaine de photographies de Victor Hugo, réalisées par l'Atelier de Jersey, inaugurent le parcours. L'écrivain révèle, à travers la photographie, son sens inné de la mise en situation, développant, là encore, l'expression de son ego. - Double intime et double public : cette section rassemble une trentaine d'autoportraits de photographes réalisés à des fins non commerciales (portraits psychologiques, expérimentaux), Nadar, Bayard, mais également des autoportraits réalisés à des fins commerciales. - Double symbolique : cette partie réunit une vingtaine d'autoportraits de photographes se désignant de manière allusive (un vêtement significatif, l'appareil photographique lui-même, l'ombre portée ou d'autres symboles…). - Double ludique : à travers une trentaine d'œuvres de photographes anonymes ou connus, cette section rend compte de la démocratisation et du développement de la pratique photographique entraînée par l'arrivée d'appareils plus maniables dans une perspective souvent ludique (ratés, montages, déformations, travestissements et déguisements).
