Sexual Selection in Primates provides an account of all aspects of sexual selection in primates, combining theoretical insights, comprehensive reviews of the primate literature and comparative perspectives from relevant work on other mammals, birds and humans. Topics include sex roles, sexual dimorphism in weapons, ornaments and armaments, sex ratios, sex differences in behaviour and development, mate choice, sexual conflict, sex-specific life history strategies, sperm competition and infanticide. The outcome of the evolutionary struggle between the sexes, the flexibility of roles and the leverage of females are discussed and emphasised throughout. Sexual Selection in Primates is aimed at graduates and researchers in primatology, animal behaviour, evolutionary biology and comparative psychology.

The principal objective of this study was to select genotypes of G. hirsutum genetically balanced and expressing the "inhibition of gossypol synthesis only in the seeds" trait introgressed from the wild species G. sturtianum. Several recurrent backcrossing and selfing were realised on the trispecific hybrid HRS (G. hirsutum x G. raimondii x G. sturtianum) BC2S2 and BC3 progenies. The application of a pressure of selection based on the evaluation of the external gossypol glands density and/or the content of gossypol in seeds in each generation of selfing and backcrossing of the descent of the trispecific hybrid allowed to isolate fertile tetraploid cotton plants producing regularly completely "glandless" seeds or seeds with very low gossypol glands density. The genes responsible of the "inhibition of the synthesis of the gossypol only in the seed" trait coming from G. sturtianum expressed them selves in the presence of the two major genes Gl2 and Gl3 of G. hirsutum. The use of mapped microsatellites markers uniformly distributed on the 26 linkage groups of the G. hirsutum genetic map permitted to monitor the introgression of chromosomal segments of G. sturtianum and G. raimondii and the evaluation of their degree of conservation in the selected progenies of the HRS hybrid. The achievement of QTL (Quantitative Trait Loci) analysis according to different methods (single marker analysis, ANOVA, 1000 replication test) allowed the identification of six SSR markers significantly linked to the expresssion of the researched trait and to map, for the first time, QTLs involved in the expression of the trait "inhibition of the gossypol synthesis only in the seed". From the investigation we carried out it appears that the genetic determinism of this trait is polygenic and that at least four chromosomal segments are involved in its expression. The plants selected in this work constitute valuable genetic stocks for the introgression of interesting agronomic traits from the wild parental species of HRS into G. hirsutum.

Soay Sheep synthesises one of the most detailed studies of demography and dynamics in a naturally regulated population of mammals. Unlike most other large mammals, the Soay sheep population of Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago show persistent oscillations, sometimes increasing or declining by more than 60% in a year. Soay Sheep explores the causes of these oscillations and their consequences for selection on genetic and phenotypic variation within the population, drawing on studies over nearly twenty years of the life-histories and reproductive careers of many individuals. Covering population dynamics, demography and their effects on selection, energetic and resource limitations on the interaction between sheep and parasites, and the adaptive significance of their reproductive characteristics, it provides unique insights into the regulation of other herbivore populations and the effects of environmental change on selection and adaptation. It will be essential reading for vertebrate ecologists, demographers, evolutionary biologists and behavioural ecologists.
