The last half-century has witnessed dramatic declines in gender inequality, evidenced by the rise of egalitarian views on gender roles and the narrowing of long-standing gender gaps in university attendance and labor force participation. This development, while spectacular, has been coupled with similarly impressive forms of resistance to equalization, most notably the continuing tendency for women to crowd into female "occupational ghettos." This book answers the important questions: Why has such extreme segregation persisted even as other types of gender inequality have lessened? Why is segregation especially extreme in precisely those countries that appear most committed to egalitarian reform and family-friendly policies?

In this book, the authors highlight the lack of attention to employment, and especially informal employment, in poverty reduction strategies and point to the links between being informally employed, being a woman or a man, and being poor. They do this within the context of major changes relating to economic restructuring and liberalization and map out the impacts on different categories of informal producers and workers, both men and women. The book draws widely on recent data and evidence of the global research policy network called Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WI

This book represents the coming together of two key debates within organization studies: theorizing on gender and ways of understanding resistance. These debates have been given renewed vigour with the 'postmodern turn' in organization studies and feminist theory. Fusing these two literatures together offers a far deeper understanding of the issues of power, subjectivity and agency.Representing a growing interest in the contributions that feminist theorizing can offer to the study of organizations, this book focuses on issues of gender and resistance in organizations and, in particular

Investigating the radicalising effects of gender in the Lancashire cotton mills between 1880 and 1914, this provocative work challenges the received wisdom that women were passive victims of a sexually segregated workplace. Instead it brings to the fore the proactive efforts of female workers to secure workplace equality, the successes of which led them to question and challenge their assigned position in wider society.

Taiwan's rapid socio-economic and political transformation has given rise to a gender-conscious middle class that is attempting to redefine the roles of women in society, to restructure relationship patterns, and to organize in groups outside the family unit. This work examines internal psychological processes and external societal processes as the feminist movement in Taiwan expands and new gender roles are explored. The chapter authors represent a cross-section of disciplines -- history, anthropology, and sociology -- and different generations of China/Taiwan scholars. The book places the issues facing Taiwan's women's movement in social, political, and economic contexts. It examines gender relations, the role of women in Chinese society, and issues related to women throughout history. Feminism and gender relations are also viewed from the context of film and literature. The authors look at the contemporary roles that women play in Taiwan's work force and how the sexes perceive each other in the workplace. They discuss the role of women during Taiwan's industrialization, their role in the island's commercial and agricultural sectors, and more.
