Abstract

Increasingly, psychologists are becoming aware of sensitivity needs with respect to treating patients from differing cultures. Culture can play an important role both in what a patient discloses about themselves, how likely they are to follow a therapist's advice, and whether specific therapies are likely to be effective for them. Following on the heels of Tseng's ""Handbook of Cultural Psychiatry"" comes this ""Clinical Application of Cultural Psychiatry."" This more concise book focuses on information most relevant to treating patients. The book discusses how culture plays a role in

Abstract

This book examines the changing linguistic and cultural identities of bilingual students through the narratives of four Japanese returnees (kikokushijo) as they spent their adolescent years in North America and then returned to Japan to attend university. As adolescents, these students were polarized toward one language and culture over the other, but through a period of difficult readjustment in Japan they became increasingly more sophisticated in negotiating their identities and more appreciative of their hybrid selves. Kanno analyzes how educational institutions both in thei

Abstract

This elegant history considers a fascinating array of texts, cultural practices, and intellectual processes-including maps and mapmaking, poetry, travel writing, popular fiction, and encyclopedias-to chart the emergence of a new geographical consciousness in early modern Japan. Marcia Yonemoto's wide-ranging history of ideas traces changing conceptions and representations of space by looking at the roles played by writers, artists, commercial publishers, and the Shogunal government in helping to fashion a new awareness of space and place in this period. Her impressively researched study shows how spatial and geographical knowledge confined to elites in early Japan became more generalized, flexible, and widespread in the Tokugawa period. In the broadest sense, her book grasps the elusive processes through which people came to name, to know, and to interpret their worlds in narrative and visual forms.

Abstract

Psychology and Buddhism are each concerned with understanding and transforming human behavior. Moreover, both traditions have relevance that extends beyond the individual to the community and global level. Indeed some Buddhist traditions, such as the Nichiren sect, have devoted their entire mission to the establishment of peace worldwide. This book advances a serious consideration of how the goals and practices of psychology can be informed and enriched by Buddhist traditions that transcend the individual to consider the interconnectedness of all things, and the responsibility we have towards the other. Individualistic and psychotherapeutic applications of Buddhism in psychology are examined, followed by a bold step into the community arena, with consideration given to the intersection between community psychology and Buddhist approaches to empowerment, social change, and prevention. The emerging perspective of individuals and communities, empowered and ready to engage the millennium, ultimately has global implications for the future of humankind. Psychology and Buddhism envisions how future integration and collaboration between psychology and Buddhism have the potential to transform the way human beings understand and interact with one another on a global scale.

Abstract

lthough the term “diversity” is widely used, there is often no agree- A ment as to its meaning or how attention to diversity should be - erationalized within the context of programming or research. This text provides a foundation for the examination of such issues, with sugg- tions for the integration of various approaches into substance use tre- ment programs and research. The impetus for this work derived from multiple interactions over a period of several years with colleagues, s- dents, research participants, and community-based providers, who noted the frequent inattention paid to such concerns in the context of treatment and research, often despite an acknowledgment of a group’s particular historical legacy in the United States and the impact of that history on the initiationandprolongationofsubstanceusewithinaspeci?edcommunity, or the barriers to treatment that may have resulted. Chapter 1 de?nes what is meant by diversity through an examination ofrelatedterms, suchas“culture,”“ethnicity”“race,”“sex,”“gender,”and “sexual orientation. ” Clearly, this discussion does not and cannot re?ect all possible permutations of human existence that re?ect diversity. For instance, although the text does make mention of considerations related to religious differences and cognitive capacity, neither is highlighted as a separatetopic. Additionally, theemphasisonspeci?edgroupsisnotmeant to imply that other groups, such as Euro-Americans or heterosexual men, do not have concerns that may differ from those of other communities and that deserve consideration in the development and implementation of programs and research endeavors. However trite it may seem, one text cannot do it all.

Abstract

The Orang Suku Laut consider themselves indigenous Malays. Yet their interaction with others who call themselves Malays is characterised on both sides by fear of harmful magic and witchcraft. The nomadic Orang Suku Laut believe that the Qur'an contains elements of black magic, while the settled Malays consider the nomads dangerous, dirty and backward. At the centre of this study, based on first-hand anthropological data, is the symbolism of money and the powerful influence it has on social relationships within the Riau archipelago. The first major publication on these maritime nomadic community
