It is by now common knowledge that one of the aspects upon which the survival of the University depends is how it will make the best possible use of the new technologies (e-learning). Despite the acceptance of this principle, difficulties arise when one attempts to proceed from the mere declaration to actually planning activities and putting them into effect. Les défis posés par l'avènement de l'informatique, les nouvelles structures de travail, les modifications dans l'exercice des rôles de parents et de citoyens exigent désormais d'apprendre autrement. De nouvelles pratiques s'imposent tant dans le monde de l'éducation que de la formation : approche par compétences, apprentissage par problèmes, contrat d'apprentissage, coaching, organisation apprenante, etc. Autant de termes neufs pour de nouvelles réalités dont le dénominateur commun est la nécessaire autonomie du sujet dans les apprentissages qu'il doit réaliser. Depuis les trente dernières années, des chercheurs se sont intéressés à l'étude de l'autoformation en relation avec l'éducation des jeunes, la formation en entreprise ou l'éducation populaire. Ce livre fait état de leurs principales découvertes en présentant : l'évolution du domaine d'étude de l'autoformation et les principaux courants de pensée qu'on y retrouve ; les principales caractéristiques d'une situation d'autoformation ; les compétences particulières à développer chez l'apprenant et chez le facilitateur (enseignant ou formateur) ; les tests et les questionnaires de diagnostic de l'autonomie dans l'apprentissage ; les méthodes qui sont souvent associées à des aspects de l'autoformation.
