The technology surrounding sensors and transducers is advancing at a rapid pace. New developments continue to make headlines, demonstrating the importance of these revolutionary components to the automotive industry. In this second edition of *Sensors and Transducers*, the latest advances are explored in a comprehensive collection of 105 recent papers, none of which were included in the book's first edition. Editor Ronald K. Jurgen offers an informative introduction in Section I of *Sensors and Transducers*, clearly explaining the overall format and layout of the book. Section II, **Sensors and Their Applications**, contains papers that Jurgen has grouped in a unique, beneficial manner - by the parameters they measure, rather than their corresponding applications. **Modern Sensor Technologies** are explored in Section III, emphasizing newer design approaches that are potentially applicable across the board. Section IV, **A Look to the Future**, offers a glimpse into where sensors and transducers have yet to lead us.

In addition, the new edition explains new electronically controlled vehicle motion control systems including advanced suspension, electronically controlled electric power steering, 4-wheel steering and electronically controlled electric brakes. The braking systems are part of an integrated motion control system that couples ABS brakes; traction control and variable vehicle dynamics for enhanced stability are also described. The development of hybrid/electric vehicles and their associated electronic control/monitoring systems as well as the new technologies incorporated into conventional gasoline and diesel-fueled engines are also discussed. *Extensive revision of a popular text *Covers the shift from 14-volt to 42-volt systems *Includes information on future automotive electronic systems.

Focus is pointed on the highly favorable physical properties of hydrogen (H 2 ) with regard to its combustion characteristics in internal combustion engines. Thereby it will be shown in how far the performance of next generation hydrogen engines can be improved by implementing a direct fuel injection system instead of the conventional port injection approach. Results from numerical as well as from experimental investigations will be used to clearly give a vision of the overall future potential of hydrogen for combustion engines in comparison to fuel cell systems.
