Pubblicato a Firenze nel 1496, il Trattato costituisce, con l'Epistola responsiva e il Dialogo (già editi dallo stesso curatore nel volume "Questa è la terra tua". Savonarola a Firenze, Sismel-Edizioni del Galluzzo 2000), la trilogia degli scritti che Domenico Benivieni dedicò alla difesa della dottrina e dell'operato del frate domenicano in un momento assai difficile per il movimento 'piagnone'. Si differenzia tuttavia dagli altri due opuscoli per il tono e la struttura. Il Trattato infatti si articola in 15 capitoli nel corso dei quali, accanto ad un breve riepilogo dei fondamenti della predicazione del Savonarola, Benivieni riveste i panni del maestro universitario e, sullo schema di una quaestio disputata, argomenta le 'ragioni' che provano la veridicità delle sue profezie e la sua assoluta fedeltà all'ispirazione evangelica. E' un'opera colta, che si rivolge deliberatamente ai dotti, laici ed ecclesiastici, per mostrare, utilizzando lo strumento filosofico, la profondità della simplicitas cristiana a fronte della mundana sapientia.

Savonarola (1452-1498) saw it as his highest priority to substantiate Christianity's claim to truth, an aspect that has hitherto found scant attention. Although in his youth he had himself been tempted to exchange Catholic Christianity for a neo-Epicurean view of the world, he spent his whole life seeking arguments for the truth of the faith. Following from Aristotelian empiricism and the lines of scientific enquiry, he attempts at an inductive proof for the truth of Christianity with the argument that the observation of Christians' ethical conduct and the causal analysis of these perceptual data allows one to conclude that the faith motivating such behaviour is true.
