Est-il vraiment certain qu'on aime en France les livres plus qu'ailleurs ? On laissera la question en suspens : ce n'est pas l'objet du présent livre... Ici, c'est de bibliothèques qu'il est question et la place qu'a tenue dans leur conception l'un des architectes les plus marquants du XIXe siècle : Henri Labrouste (1801-1875). On ne lui doit pas seulement ces exceptionnels édifices qui abritent Sainte-Geneviève et la Bibliothèque nationale, rue de Richelieu, mais, par l'éclat de ces palais destinés aux livres, on lui est redevable en outre d'avoir marqué le lancement d'une politique nouvelle, inédite et, dans une large mesure, sans équivalent en Europe : la création, par l'État ou sous son contrôle, d'équipements culturels destinés à la collectivité. Si l'on écarte, en effet, la reconstruction de l'Opéra en 1821 et les travaux commandés par Charles X au Louvre, l'édification de Sainte-Geneviève, dont Labrouste est chargé en 1838, caractérise le point de départ d'une longue série d'architectures, d'abord destinées aux livres et à la lecture. Archives, musées et théâtre se disputeront la deuxième place. On veut expliquer ici comment, d'un coup d'essai, Labrouste a bâti un chef-d'œuvre, dont les capacités de fonctionnement étonnent aujourd'hui encore ; comment l'expérience de Sainte-Geneviève, ancrée dans la tradition monastique et nourrie des réflexions recueillies sous la Restauration et au début de la Monarchie de juillet, s'est inscrite dans le contexte international du XIXe siècle tout entier ; comment elle a permis une impressionnante éclosion de réalisations, en Europe comme aux États-Unis. À Sainte-Geneviève, ce n'est pas seulement le principe de programme " bibliothéconomique " que l'architecte français a inventé, c'est encore le dessin d'une travée type : il devint par excellence le symbole architecturé de la bibliothèque. Enfin, on trouvera ici une chronologie détaillée du chantier et la reproduction en couleur d'un nombre important de dessins de Labrouste inédits jusqu'à présent.

"Art and Photography" surveys a rich and important history, from the 1960s to the 21st century. Arranged thematically, it presents works by the most significant international artists who have explored and extended the boundaries of photography. This influential body of work by over 160 artists over four decades is contextualised in the "Documents" section by original artist's statements and interviews, as well as lucid reflections on photography by major thinkers of our era such as Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard. Today photography is art's pre-eminent medium. Photography pervades our visual culture. It has become what painting was in previous centuries: a universal language. Today's photographers are internationally admired as "the painters of modern life". Yet, it took the whole of the 20th century for photography to reach this status. On its invention, the photograph was derided as a purely mechanical, "artless" medium which could never be considered among the fine arts. As the 20th century unfolded, Modernist movements experimented with the photograph and expanded its limits, yet still the art establishment held out. Only recently have the majority of art museums begun acquiring works of photography. In 1976, when the Museum of Modern Art, New York - one of the first institutions to collect photographs - staged a retrospective of the American colour photographer William Eggleston, this was a groundbreaking event: it was the first time colour photography had been exhibited, as art, in a major museum. This moment in the 1970s marked a dramatic sea change, but the tides had begun to turn in the early 1960s, when artists such as Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha and Gerhard Richter used the everyday, mass-produced quality of the snapshot as a basis for their work.
