Abstract

During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. This current state of the arts and its recent history are represented via more than 150 works by 55 artists, including Nam June Paik, Kara Walker, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, Christian Boltanski, Sophie Calle, Fischli & Weiss, Ann Hamilton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser, Andreas.

Abstract

It is not an exaggeration to write that Hans Ulrich Obrist is everywhere, has curated everything and has interviewed everyone. If "peripatetic" is the word most overused to describe him, it is not inappropriate. The Swiss-born, everywhere-based curator and head of the Programme Migrateurs at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris has an unstoppable wanderlust and a related symptom: his penchant for interviewing anyone and everyone who piques his curiosity, be they artist, scientist, writer, curator, composer, architect, thinker, etc. Since 1993, Obrist has conducted more than 300 interviews, 75 of which are collected here in a selection that respects the cultural and professional diversity of the interviewees. Each interview is introduced by a short text outlining the biography of the interviewee and giving some contextual information on the recording of the interview.

Abstract

Dreams and Conflicts - The Dictatorship of the Viewer is the exhibition catalogue of the 50th Venice Biennale. 250 artists, 63 foreign countries, Iran makes its debut, China comes, Mexico returns, technology takes a back seat, the great artists return, everything starts again from 1964. Dreams and Conflicts will not show political art, but rather a reflection on the politics of art. The viewer's experience before the exceptional nature of the artist's vision. Two contemporary subjects divided simply by a different look. The book is divided into the following sections: Z.O.U. Zone of Urgency: Zones where artistic creation has accelerated powerfully in the last ten years: China, Korea, Vietnam, Brazil, India; Individual Systems by Igor Zabel: Artists who use their own creative language to create a world of independent images as defence against the ideological aggression of society, particularly in East Europe. The Structure of Survival by Carlos Basualdo: The ways in which artists and architects have reacted against the effects of the financial recessions and politics of structural adaptation in developing countries. Utopia Station by Molly Nesbit, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rirkrit Tiravanija: Contemporary art as workshop and historic non-space; Conflit by Catherine David: The work of artists in areas of conflict, such as the Middle East and Central Asia, who must constantly redefine the limits and freedom of their creative work; The Everyday Altered by Gabriel Orozco: The new generation of artists working in Mexico and Cuba. Clandestines by Francesco Bonami: A selection by 30 young artists; Fault Lines by Gilane Tawardos: In association with the Forum Africa Contemporary Art; Delays and Revolutions by Francesco Bonami and Daniel Birnbaum: contemporary art as constant conflict between the avant-garde and tradition, experiment and ideal form. The Zone constructed by A12, by Massimiliano Gioni: A temporary building to house the work of young Italian artists.
