Abstract

This book is a collection of talks presented at the International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei, held at Lake Baikal, Russia, on 24 - 28 July 2001. The talks were given by the leading scientists in the physics of exotic nuclei.Among the topics of the Symposium were the following: production and study of properties of nuclei in extreme states, strongly deformed nuclei, highly excited nuclei and nuclei far from the line of stability as well as nuclei having large angular momenta.New results of investigations are presented in the book - in particular, the data on new nuclei with proton or neutron ha

Abstract

This volume contains many excellent articles presenting the most recent progress in high energy physics and the current interesting problems concerning flavor physics. The reader will see how flavor physics has become a central area of particle physics, with the Standard Model (SM) being subjected to increasingly precise experiments, and why the remaining puzzles in the SM, such as the mechanisms of symmetry breaking and CP violation, as well as fermion mass and mixing generation, all are mysteries hidden in the physics of flavor. The book also shows that flavor physics is likely to be a windo

Abstract

Boasting more than three hundred illustrations, the majority in full color, The Particle Odyssey takes us on an exhilarating tour of the subatomic world. The pictures here are truly marvelous--over 100 of the best images ever taken of particle 'events'--mysterious, abstract, often beautiful photographs of the tracks of subatomic particles as they speed, curve, dance, or explode through cloud and bubble chambers, stacks of photographic emulsion, and giant multi-element detectors. There are illustrations of spiraling electrons, the tell-tale 'vees' of strange particles, matter and antimatter born from raw energy, energetic jets of particles spraying out from the decay points of quarks and gluons. Complementing the illustrations is a vividly written account of the key experiments and fundamental discoveries that have led to our current understanding of the nature of the universe. There are individual portraits of all the major subatomic particles, from the electron to the newly discovered top quark. The authors describe the history of experimental particle physics: its origins in the discovery of X-rays in 1895; the dissection of the atom by Rutherford and others; the unexpected revelations of the cosmic rays; the discovery of quarks and the rise of the 'standard model' in the last part of the 20th century. And they also look at the great questions that face physicists today--Where did antimatter go? What is dark matter? Can there be a theory of everything? A perfect gift for science buffs, The Particle Odyssey will enthrall everyone eager for a glimpse into the previously unknown the world of the atom.

Abstract

The area of physics involving muons and neutrinos has become exciting in particle physics. Using their high intensity sources, physicists undertake, in various ways, extensive searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model, such as tests of supersymmetric grand unification (SUSY-GUT) and precision measurements of the muon and neutrino properties, which will in future extend to ambitious studies such as determination of the three-generation neutrino mixing matrix elements and CP violation in the lepton sector. The physics of this field is advancing, with potential improvements of the sourc

Abstract

This is the fourth and last volume of the invaluable publication At the Frontier of Particle Physics: Handbook of QCD. In this volume the reader will find three important sections. The first is devoted to QCD-based phenomenology. It covers issues deeply woven into the fabric of particle physics: weak interactions of light quarks (J Bijnens) and heavy quarkonium physics (A Hoang). The second section is a report on recent advances in the understanding of confinement in three dimensions in the Georgi-Glashow model (I Kogan and A Kovner). The third section deals with lattice QCD (A Kronfeld) and l

Abstract

This collection of twenty articles in honor of the noted physicist and mentor Sergei Matinyan focuses on topics that are of fundamental importance to high-energy physics, field theory and cosmology. The topics range from integrable quantum field theories, three-dimensional Ising models, parton models and tests of the Standard Model, to black holes in loop quantum gravity, the cosmological constant and magnetic fields in cosmology. A pedagogical essay by Lev Okun concentrates on the problem of fundamental units. The articles have been written by well-known experts and are addressed to graduate

Abstract

The proceedings of DIS 2001 present the most updated status of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) physics. Topics like structure function measurements and phenomenology, QCD studies in DIS and photoproduction, spin physics and diffractive interactions are reviewed in detail, with emphasis on those studies that push the test of QCD and the Standard Model to the limits of their present range of validity, towards both the very high and the very low four-momentum transfers in the lepton-proton scattering. Moreover, this workshop coincided with the transition between the first period of experimentatio

Abstract

This advanced text develops first the underlying concepts of quantum mechanics, thus starting with state spaces of finite dimension followed by the representation of coordinates with their principal formal elements, and their applications such as the harmonic oscillator, magnetic momentum, the hydrogen atom, stationary perturbations etc. This fresh and original text on quantum mechanics focuses on: the development of numerical methods for obtaining specific results; the presentation of group theory and the systematic use of operators; the introduction of the functional integral and its applications in approximation; the discussion of distant correlations and experimental measurements. Numerous exercises with hints and solutions, examples and applications, and a guide to key references help the student to work with the text.

Abstract

This book provides a survey of the current state of research into the physics of neutrinos. It is presented in a form accessible to non-specialists and graduate students, but will also be useful as a handbook for researchers in this field. The reader finds here a global view of the areas of physics in which neutrinos play important roles, including astrophysics and cosmology. The book is intended to be self-contained: Starting from the standard theory of electroweak interactions, the key notions are explained in detail and the fundamental equations are derived explicitly, so that readers can understand their precise content. Prime emphasis is given to the mass of neutrinos and its implications. The first eight chapters deal mostly with well-established knowledge whilst later chapters probe into research problems. .
