Orfèvre et sculpteur florentin, Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) est le premier artiste à avoir écrit le récit de sa vie. Il entendait laisser de lui l'image d'un génie qui traitait d'égal à égal avec les artistes, tel le "divin Michel-Ange", et les grands de son temps princes italiens, papes ou le roi de France. Son autobiographie, qui inspira Berlioz, n'est pas une œuvre d'historien. Benvenuto Cellini crée sa vie à la façon de Casanova. Il se traite lui-même en personnage. Voleur, menteur, aventurier assassin, il a tous les défauts. Peu importe, car sa Vie donne une image assez juste de la Renaissance en Italie. Pour Goethe, qui le traduisit, cette œuvre "ne vise pas à l'étude de l'être moral. Néanmoins, elle peint l'homme tout entier, presque malgré l'auteur, avec une vérité saisissante", elle nous fait "connaître l'âme impressionnable d'un artiste qui est l'expression d'une époque"... et définit le statut de l'artiste jusqu'à nos jours.
