A l'occasion du XXe anniversaire de l'abolition de la peine de mort en France (loi du 9 octobre 1981), l'Association française de criminologie (AFC) a pris l'initiative de constituer un collectif d'association " Octobre 2001 " avec trois objectifs : - saluer le vote du Parlement de 1981 qui a permis à la France de rejoindre la famille des nations abolitionnistes ; - participer à la mobilisation internationale pour l'abolition universelle de la peine de mort, de la torture et des traitements inhumains ou dégradants ; - initier une réflexion aussi large que possible sur la façon de sanctionner les crimes les plus graves, en Europe, au XXIe siècle, dans le respect des Droits de l'homme. Dans cette perspective, cet ouvrage pose, clairement et sans angélisme, les bases d'une réflexion sur la réclusion criminelle à perpétuité, les périodes de sûreté qui interdisent toute forme d'aménagement des peines, les très longues peines, mais aussi les rapports entre crime et folie, justice pénale et prise en charge psychiatrique, sanction et obligation de soins.

Capital punishment has been carried out in Japan since ancient times. Although ancient Japan uniquely suspended executions for several centuries towards the end of the first millennium, today the death penalty is firmly established in Japan. This volume explores the current state of capital punishment, the domestic discussion on the subject, and the influence of the political orientations of the governments of recent years. The treatise is of current interest especially because of the Aum cult, whose leader Shoko Asahara is at present tried in Tokyo. If found guilty, he may be sentenced to death. After a three years' interval (between 1989 and 1993), Japan is nowadays undergoing a capital punishment "renaissance" with 39 executions between 1993 and 2000.
