Ce traité en forme de dialogue dans la tradition du Décaméron se déroule sur deux journées et met en scène sept femmes, toutes issues de l'aristocratie vénitienne, mais d’âge et de statut civil variés. Une fois répartis les rôles entre « accusation » et « défense » du sexe masculin, le procès intenté aux hommes est moins sommaire qu'on ne le pourrait croire. Le militantisme apparent du traité est miné par l'ambivalence des positions féminines et par la curiosité des devisantes, qui les induit à toutes sortes de digressions. Le fil du dialogue est entrelacé de textes poétiques et de récits divers, tandis que la querelle des femmes est enracinée dans un contexte socio-historique qui confère à l'ouvrage valeur de document sur la société vénitienne de l'époque.
