Het Nederlands dat wij nu spreken, is het resultaat van een ontwikkeling van duizend eeuwen. Vanaf het eerste begin heeft bij de opbouw en het gebruik van taal een universeel principe een rol gespeeld: de keuze tussen analyse en synthese. Bij de samenvoeging van woorden moest en moet nog steeds worden gekozen tussen uiteenzetting en samenvatting: geven we de informatie in successieve delen of leggen we die als één geheel op tafel? Stap voor stap wordt uiteengezet, hoe de keuze tussen synthese en analyse de bouw van taalkundige constructies bepaalt. Het inzicht dat het Nederlands, van de meest globale structuren tot in de kleinste details, door deze oppositie kan worden verklaard, is geleidelijk aan gegroeid bij de bestudering van allerlei syntactische problemen. De essentie van tegenstellingen en veranderingen blijkt telkens weer tot dit begrippenpaar te herleiden. Aan de hand van een ruim aantal voorbeelden wordt dat hier gedemonstreerd. Deze inleiding in de taalkunde is bestemd voor iedereen (of een ieder) die belangstelling heeft voor taal in het algemeen en voor de Nederlandse taal in het bijzonder. Het boek bevat nieuwe inzichten in het ontstaan en de ontwikkeling van talen en verheldert de structuur van het hedendaagse Nederlands. De originele en onconventionele beschouwingen geven stof tot nadenken en discussie.

This concise history of structural linguistics charts its development from the 1870s to the present day. It explains what structuralism was and why its ideas are still central today. For structuralists a language is a self-contained and tightly organised system whose history is of changes from one state of the system to another. This idea has its origin in the nineteenth century and was developed in the twentieth by Saussure and his followers, including the school of Bloomfield in the United States. Through the work of Chomsky, especially, it is still very influential. Matthews examines the beginnings of structuralism and analyses the vital role played in it by the study of sound systems and the problems of how systems change. He discusses theories of the overall structure of a language, the 'Chomskyan revolution' in the 1950s, and the structuralist theories of meaning.
