"Der Band vervollständigt die schon erschienenen Teilbände II (Psalmen 51-100) und III (Psalmen 101-150) des Psalmenkommentars der viel zu früh verstorbenen Bibelwissenschaftler Frank-Lothar Hossfeld (1942-2015) und Erich Zenger (1939-2010). Band I (Ps 1-50) folgt demselben exegetischen Programm der 'Psalmen- und Psalterexegese' wie die beiden vorangegangenen Bände: Die Psalmen werden sowohl in ihrer individuellen Gestalt als auch im Zusammenhang des gesamten Psalters erschlossen. Kommentiert werden in diesem Band unter anderem die für das Gesamtverständnis des Psalters so bedeutenden Eröffnungspsalmen 1 und 2 mit den Themen Tora und Messias sowie frömmigkeits- und theologiegeschichtlich so wirkmächtige Psalmen wie der Hymnus Ps 8 ('Was ist der Mensch'), das individuelle Vertrauenslied Ps 16 ('Du überlässt mein Leben nicht der Totenwelt'), die Meditation auf Gottes Tora in Ps 19 ('Die Himmel erzählen'), das Vertrauensgebet Ps 23 ('Der Herr mein Hirt'), der messianische Psalm zur Hochzeit des Königs Ps 45 sowie die zahlreichen Gebete der Klage, der Sehnsucht und des Gottvertrauens. Neben der Auslegung des Masoretischen Textes werden die Septuaginta sowie die Rezeption bei den Kirchenvätern und in der Liturgie eigens beleuchtet.Der Kommentar bietet zugleich eine Einführung in die Entstehung, den Aufbau und die Theologie des gesamten Psalters. Dabei greift er die Auslegungen der Bände II und III auf und integriert sie in ein Gesamtverständnis, das die Abfolge der einzelnen Psalmen als eine Erzählung versteht, die - vor allem durch die Überschriften markiert - als „geistliches Tagebuch Davids" (Erich Zenger) in Korrelation zur Davidgeschichte in den Samuelbüchern zu lesen ist. Nach dem Ende des davidischen Königtums (Ps 89) werden in den Psalmenbüchern IV (Ps 90-106) und V (Ps 107-150) eine theokratische und eine messianische Perspektive theologisch miteinander verschränkt.Der Psalter ist das im Neuen Testament wie im übrigen damaligen Judentum meist zitierte und gebrauchte Buch. Ihm kommt nicht zuletzt im jüdisch-christlichen Dialog eine einzigartige Bedeutung zu." --
