Provides an overview of the nature, manufacture, structure, properties, processing, and applications of commercially available plastics materials. This revised and updated edition adds new chapters on materials selection and special polymers, including biodegradable and electroconductive polymers and thermoplastic elastomers. In addition, many new plastics materials are added throughout and more information is included on testing methods and data.

This Test Guideline describes a method to analyse the solution/extraction behaviour of polymers in water, which uses the flask method with modifications. Three samples of 10 g of particles of the test substance are weighed into each of three vessels fitted with glass stoppers. 1000 ml of water is added to each vessel. The vessels are tightly stoppered and then agitated at 20 °C normally during a period of 24 hours. Then, the content of each vessel is centrifuged or filtered and the concentration of polymer in the clear aqueous phase is determined by a suitable analytical method. For a direct analysis of the aquous phase one sample size is sufficent. Analysis of the aqueous phase for the total polymeric species is possible either by a sufficiently sensitive method or by vacuum evaporation to dryness of the aqueous extract and spectroscopic or AAS/ICP analysis of the residue. When determination of the solution/extraction behaviour of the polymer consists in determining only the total organic carbon content (TOC) of the aqueous extract, an additional test should be conducted, with two different sample sizes in triplicate, using ten times smaller polymer samples and the same amounts of water as those used in the first test. A gravimetric determination is performed on the undissolved/not-extracted part of the sample.

Of central importance in personal care, food, pharmaceutics, and biotechnology, biomaterials and biosubstrates formed the subject of the fifth meeting of the Royal Society-Unilever INDO-UK Forum in Materials Science and Engineering. The programme for this meeting dwelt on two principal foci: (i) new advances in the measurement of the supramolecular and colloidal structures, and (ii) the relationship of these structures to the functional properties of the materials. This volume is a compilation of selected papers presented at the meeting by world-renowned scientists who included, among others, P

Supramolecular chemistry is one of the most actively pursued fields of science. Its implications reach from molecular recognition in synthetic and natural complexes to exciting new applications in chemical technologies, materials, and biological and medical science. Principles and Methods in Supramolecular Chemistry gives a systematic and concise overview of this diverse subject. Particular emphasis is given to the physical principles and methods which are important in the design, characterization, and application of supramolecular systems. Features that make this monograph essential reading for graduates and researchers in this area include:* A comprehensive overview of non-covalent interactions in supramolecular complexes* A guide to characterizing such complexes by physical methods* Selected applications of synthetic supramolecular systems* Question and answer sections* Illustrations from the Author's webpage which compliment the book.

The 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society, in 1999 sparked this third edition of Applied Polymer Science with emphasis on the developments of the last few years and a serious look at the challenges and expectations of the 21st Century. This book is divided into six sections, each with an Associate Editor responsible for the contents with the group of Associate Editors acting as a board to interweave and interconnect various topics and to insure complete coverage. It is the belief of the editors of this book that the recognition of block copolymers as being amphiphilic molecules and sharing common features with other well-studied amphiphiles will prove beneficial to both the surfactant and the polymer communities. An aim of this book is to bridge the two communities and cross-fertilise the different fields. To this end, leading researchers in the field of amphiphilic block copolymer self-assembly, some having a background in surfactant chemistry, and others with polymer physics roots, have agreed to join forces and contribute to this book.
