Abstract

Dit boek levert een bijdrage aan het gelijkekansendebat in Groot-Brittannië. Centraal in dit debat staat momenteel de leerachterstand van jongens. Maar dit was niet altijd het geval. In de jaren zeventig stond het onderwijs voor meisjes in het middelpunt van de belangstelling. Met name de vaststelling dat ondanks de goede leerprestaties van de meisjes, dat niet resulteerde in een goede plaats op de arbeidsmarkt. De verschillende opvattingen en verwachtingen die men had over de rol die meisjes en jongens in de maatschappij te vervullen hadden, zorgden ervoor dat meisjes nog altijd in de traditionele 'zachte' sectoren terecht kwamen. Vandaag de dag is er veel ten goede veranderd. Toch blijven vrouwen tegen het glazen plafond botsen en ondanks berichten over de 'nieuwe man' zijn het nog altijd de vrouwen die jongleren om gezin en arbeid te combineren.
