Een goede kwarteeuw geleden werden de eerste pastoraal werksters benoemd binnen de Rooms Katholieke Kerk. Om dit feit te memoreren werden voor dit boek ruim veertig vrouwelijke pastores geïnterviewd. Een tiental van hen komen uitgebreid aan het woord over de inhoud van het pastoraat en over hun eigen functioneren. Deze tien portretten worden voorafgegaan door een bondige historische schets van het vrouwenpastoraat en worden gevolgd door een korte reflectie op de belangrijkste punten uit de interviews. Dat het vrouwenpastoraat niet altijd over rozen gaat blijkt uit het laatste hoofdstuk van het boek. Daarin gaat het over pastoraal werksters die vastlopen in hun werk, wat niet zelden het gevolg is van het moeizame contact met mannelijke collega's.
