"Globalization - seemingly the dominant economic force of this era - is a phenomenon that invites misrepresentation and exaggeration. One of its results has been to introduce several false premises into the country's policy debates. So says William Watson, whose new book draws on economics and history to pose interesting challenges to modes of thinking that have become habitual in late twentieth-century Canadian life."--Jacket

"In Unauthorized Entry, Howard Margolian absolves a succession of postwar governments of active complicity in the admission of ex-Nazis. Charges that Ottawa was indifferent to the problem are similarly discounted. In a departure from the conspiracy theories and the culture of historical victimization so prevalent nowadays, Margolian lays the blame where it belongs - on the war criminals themselves. Most, he points out, were Nazi collaborators who had escaped from eastern Europe or the Soviet Union, where evidence of their crimes remained inaccessible for almost fifty years. With no means to verify the statements given by these fraudulent refugee claimants, Canadian immigration authorities had to rely on their professional judgment and their instincts."--Jacket.

"Rethinking Church, State, and Modernity considers some central concepts in the sociology and history of religion and explores how Canada's religious experience is distinctive in the modern world. The contributors to this volume challenge the institutional approach that stresses a strict division between 'church' and 'state, ' which seems increasingly inappropriate in late-modern and post-modern society and instead, favour a more fluid interpretation."--Jacket.

In Canada, Latin America, and the New Internationalism Brian Stevenson argues that Canada's foreign policy toward Latin America has been profoundly affected by these three factors and has evolved in response to both changing domestic demands and shifting international circumstances. By analysing a pivotal period in Canada-Latin American relations, he shows us how successive Canadian governments made important initiatives toward closer relationships with Latin America and were also pressured by non-governmental organizations to play a bigger role in the region. Canada's increased role can be seen in official foreign policy commitments, such as the decision to join the Organization of American States, and in policy decisions on political refugees. He explains that while the United States has played a key role in sometimes constraining Canadian foreign policy in the region, it is important to realize that Canadian foreign policy has been steadied by a long-standing tradition of internationalism. Canada, Latin America, and the New Internationalism demonstrates that the tradition of internationalism in Canadian foreign policy as viewed from the perspective of foreign policy analysis provides the framework within which to understand and accommodate changes in its policy toward Latin America. The period which the book explores is critical in order to understand the contemporary nature and future direction of Canada-Latin America relations.

The twelve essays in the collection address cultural theory, aesthetics, and policy issues related to the economics of art in the context of globalization and the spreading influence of the practices and ideologies of market culture. With particular reference to Canada, they question whether these shifts and the rise of new media technologies are endangering or enriching public participation, democratic negotiation, and cultural diversity. The book includes essays by John Fekete on Innis and censorship, Thierry de Duve on global markets, Nicole Debreuil on the Voice of Fire controversy, and Mark Cheethum on Alex Colville and Andy Patton. It also includes specifically commissioned artworks by leading Canadian artists such as Vera Frenkel and Cheryl Sourkes. Authors: Bruce Barber (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design), Jody Berland (York), Mark A. Born in Saskatchewan in 1917, Gordon Robertson worked at the centre of government power from 1945 until his retirement in 1979. He worked directly with Prime Ministers King, St-Laurent, Pearson, and Trudeau, serving as senior advisor to the latter two. Commissioner of the Northwest Territories from 1953 to 1963, he also became the first Deputy Minister of the new Department of Northern Affairs under Jean Lesage. In this memoir he presents a first-hand account of the events and personalities that shaped Canada during the critical post-war period.Robertson tells of Canada's development from colony to nation and the prime ministers who presided over the process. He provides an assessment of each prime minister in action: how they organized the cabinets, what their qualities were and how these related to their failures and successes. Himself influential in many areas of government, Robertson played a key role in the long debate on constitutional reform and national unity. Even after his retirement, he remained active as an unofficial contitutional networker.Gordon Robertson has written no ordinary memoir. Along with the key events and personalities of his day he describes the development of his own ideas about the nature of Canada and its constitutional future. The result is a significant historical document, one that brings much insight to the history of post-war Canada.
