"Le""soft"" du Soft Cinema correspond bien sûr à""software"", c'est-à-dire du fait que dans cette machine de Lev Manovich, le film est généré par un programme. Il n'y a pas de montage pré-établi, bien que l'on puisse parler d'un certain nombre de conditions déterminés au préalable, mais cela met encore plus en avant l'importance du programme, du""software"", dans le choix des images de Manovich.""Soft"" signifie également que la machine cinématographique est également devenue""molle"", dégoulinante, pliable, c'est-à-dire modulaire. La machine a changé de forme, du fait de l'introduction de l'algorithme dans le déroulement de l'image. Soft Cinema travaille avec un système à base de""paramètres"", voire de déscripteurs, qui identifient les caractéristiques sémantiques et formelles d'une collection d'images dans une grande base de données. Pour organiser ces caractéristiques et les rendre gérable par l'ordinateur, une douzaine de catégories ou de genres sont définis par rapport à des critères formelles (mouvement, contraste, distance de la caméra) ou sémantiques (lieu du tournage, action dans le cadre). Toutes les images partagent la même douzaine de catégories, mais les valeurs identifiées à l'intérieur des catégories donnent à chaque image sa particularité. A partir de ce tissu déscriptif, la machine pioche dans cette base et construit des narrations, ou plutôt des associations qui évoqueront (éventuellement) des continuités narratives pour un spectateur. A partir de cette configuration, le spectateur est relativement passive : il regarde ce que la machine veut bien générer comme suite (éternelle) de la narration."

This short monograph combines works by Hanne Darboven and John Cage from the stock of the Bayerische Staatsgalerie moderner Kunst in Munich. It shows the independent oeuvres of two highly individual artists whose works touch upon Minimal Art. Joachim Kaak's substantial essay examines Hanne Darboven's 7 Tafeln, II from 1972/73, a geometric construction on squared millimetre paper based on prime numbers and the square. Corinna Thierolf analyses John Cage's Ryoanji, a loose series of drawings made between 1983 and 1992. The title refers to the rock garden of the Ryoanji monastery in the north-west of Kyoto. With the help of the I Ching, the ancient book of wisdom and truth which Cofucius re-edited. Cage established a number system by which he encircled 15 stones he had picked out himself with 17 different pencils. On the basis of a complex concept based on random operations, this created partly very delicate circular formations, partly a structure composed of a dense tissue of lines. These are reproduced in this book according to a rhythm predetermined by John Cage.
