Abstract

Advances in medicine make the ageing of populations in developed countries inevitable. These populations, however, will exhibit new and different characteristics, particularly in the transport sector as, unlike previous generations, they will have made widespread use of the car. How will they meet their travel needs in the future? Until now rail transport, unlike car or bus transport, has been losing its elderly clientele. Can this trend be reversed? For the frail elderly, whose needs are similar to those of the disabled, suitable services have yet to be set up. How can the mobility needs of the frail elderly, whose population is destined to grow, be met in the future? The dispersal of residential areas and the concentration of businesses and shops in large malls on the outskirts of cities will also pose serious problems as the population starts to age. Road safety, too, could suffer the adverse effects of declining driving skills among the elderly. The mobility of ageing populations undoubtedly has many implications that can no longer be ignored. Round Table 112 reviews the experiences of various countries and makes a number of recommendations for policy-makers who wish to adopt a comprehensive approach to this issue.

Abstract

One of the largest patient populations seen by neuropsychologists are older adults suffering from problems associated with aging. Further, the proportion of the population aged 65 and above is rising rapidly. This book provides a guide to neuropsychological clinicians increasingly called upon to assess this population. The book details in a step-by-step fashion the phases and considerations in performing a neuropsychological assessment of an older patient. It covers procedural details including review of patient's medical records, clinical interview, formal testing, interpretation of test scor

Abstract

The significance of hormone action in psychiatry has been long studied, now including the psychiatric effects of hormones on the aging process. This clinical reference addresses the hormonal basis of mental disorders in older people. Hormones influence a wide range of states and conditions, from pain tolerance and anorexia to attention, mood, immunity, cardiovascular and cognitive function, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. Written by an eminent team of psychiatrists, psychologists, geriatricians and neuropharmacologists, this book brings together established information and findings in four sections: • An overview of the basic science of neurosteroids • Sex difference and the roles that cortisol, thyroid hormone, and the sex steroids estrogen, progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone and testosterone play in common mental disorders and pain sensitivity • Psychoneuroimmunology in relation to age • Sex differences and hormones in psychotropic drug metabolism in the elderly.

Abstract

People are living into old age. This is actually a revolutionary statement as we look back to the start and then to the end of the twentieth century. This demographic revolution raises important practical and ethical issues and, for the most part, has led the way for the field of gerontology, the study of aging, to emerge as an area of increasing importance. With that in mind, Thorson has revised and expanded his 1995 text to serve as an introduction to the multidisciplinary field of gerontology. Gerontology is both an area of specialty and an area within the larger arena of social sciences. This text, with its friendly narrative style, assumes no prior knowledge of gerontology, sociology, or psychology and will therefore solidly serve its purpose as an overview of the field. Along with the readable style, the text is well referenced, handsomely illustrated, and thick with helpful features.

Abstract

""A welcome addition to the literature in this important area of work, that builds on...the empirical studies which have illuminated our understanding of the requirements of effective service provision. The final section...is, in a real sense, a call for action, for all of us in the field and for public officials and 'opinion makers' to respond to the need for 'Social Care' now and in the new millennium.""--from the foreword by Rose Dobrof , DSW, Brookdale Professor of Gerontology, Hunter College, and James R. Dumpson, PhD, Chairman of Policy Center for Aging, New York Community Trust. Based
