Abstract

When Indiana centenarian Chinnagounder asked Deane Curtin about his interest in traditional medicine, Curtin wondered whether it was possible for the industrialized world to interact with native cultures for reasons other than to exploit them, develop them, and eradicate their traditional practices. The answer, according to Curtin, defines the ethical character of what we typically call 'progress', and he articulates a response to Chinnagounder's challenge in terms of a new, distinctly postcolonial, environmental ethic.

Abstract

Travel writing has become central to postcolonial studies; this book provides a comprehensive introduction to the genre. It combines detailed evaluations of major contemporary models of analysis--new historicism, travelling theory, and post-colonial studies--with a series of specific studies detailing the complicity of the genre with a history of violent incursion. These explore: "Othering" discourses--of cannibalism and infanticide; the production of colonial knowledge--geographic, medicinal, zoological; the role of sexual anxiety in the construction of the gendered travelling body; the interplay between imperial and domestic spheres; reappropriation of alien discourse by indigenous cultures. The book resists the temptation to think in terms of a simple monolithic Eurocentrism and offers a more complex reading of texts produced before, during and after periods of imperial ascendancy. In doing so, it provides a more nuanced account of the hegemonic functions of travel-writing.

Abstract

In this wide-ranging study, Neil Lazarus explores the subject of cultural practice in the modern world system. The book contains individual chapters on a range of topics from modernity, globalization and the 'West', and nationalism and decolonization, to cricket and popular consciousness in the English-speaking Caribbean. Lazarus analyses social movements, ideas and cultural practices that have migrated from the 'First world' to the 'Third world' over the course of the twentieth century. Nationalism and Cultural Practice in the Postcolonial World offers an enormously erudite reading of culture and society in today's world and includes extended discussion of the work of such influential writers, critics and activists as Frantz Fanon, C. L. R. James, Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, Samir Amin, Raymond Williams, Paul Gilroy and Partha Chatterjee. This book is a politically focused, materialist intervention into postcolonial and cultural studies, and constitutes a major reappraisal of the debates on politics and culture in these fields.

Abstract

Abstract

The author attempts to describe a responsible role for the postcolonial critic within the post-colonial enclave. The book tracks the figure of the native informant through various cultural practices - philosophy, history, literature - to suggest that it emerges as the metropolitan hybrid. The book addresses feminists, philosophers, critics and interventionist intellectuals as they unite and devide. It ranges from Kant's analytic of the sublime to child labor in Bangladesh.
