Wie kent Ast Fonteyne nog? Hij was een eigenzinnig voordracht- en toneelkunstenaar. Na zijn humaniora aan het kleinseminarie van Hoogstraten studeerde hij aan de Sociale School in Heverlee voor maatschappelijk assistent, en volgde met succes hoger kunstonderwijs in Gent. Hij werkte als acteur en decor- en kostuumontwerper bij het Vlaamsche Volkstoneel (1930-1932) en Van Onzen Tijd (1932-1933). Na een "Wendepunkt" rond 1933 verliet hij als plastisch kunstenaar het expressionisme om naar een "hyper-realisme" te evolueren. Van dan af tot 1971 ontpopte hij zich ook als toonaangevend leraar dictie en voordracht aan 27 scholen uit het katholiek middelbaar en normaalonderwijs. Het was zijn betrachting Vlaanderen te esthetiseren door de jeugd een verzorgde lichaamshouding en taalgebruik aan te leren. Zijn vooroorlogs geheim lidmaatschap en zijn functie van jeugdleider van het Verdinaso (1940-1941) braken hem samen met zijn medewerking aan Zender Brussel in de repressietijd zuur op. Zijn docentschap aan het Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium in Gent wist hij te behouden. Fonteyne werd na 1945 in katholieke kringen een veelgevraagd regisseur voor toneelstukken, openlucht- en televisiespelen. Zijn grootste faam dankte hij aan het schooltoneel. Fonteynes levensverhaal illustreert op indringende wijze de zoektocht van een generatie Vlaamse intellectuelen en kunstenaars in het België van na de Eerste Wereldoorlog: het openstaan voor een veelheid aan invloeden, zowel op politiek gebied als op het gebied van de kunsten, de evolutie van anarchistische bohémien naar "communist" en "adept van de Nieuwe Orde", om ten slotte weer tot het katholicisme te komen. Een multidisciplinair team van historici, een taalkundige en een geriater brengen een levendig portret van deze bijwijlen paradoxale maar intrigerende figuur aan de hand van o.m. zijn uitgebreide brievenverzameling, dag- en reisboeken, regienota's, tekeningen en kunstfoto's.
