L'impuissance des mots à dire la couleur et les émotions qu'elle suscite, ce lieu commun de tous les discours sur la peinture, traduit un désarroi plus fondamental devant une réalité sensible qui déroute les procédures habituelles du langage. C'est pourquoi, fascinée par la peinture, la pensée philosophique s'est toujours brûlée au feu de son coloris. Lorsqu'elle quittait le terrain prudent des théories abstraites qui réfléchissaient sur les finalités ou les modalités de l'art en général pour traiter, non pas des oeuvres, elle s'y est peu risquée, mais de la représentation plastique, c'était souvent pour y privilégier le dessin, qui a toujours trouvé dans le "parti des philosophes" ses plus ardents défenseurs (résumé au dos du livre)
