In dit boek onderzoekt de auteur met een feministische blik de vooruitgang die vrouwen hebben geboekt tijdens de voorbije decennia in de academische wereld. Zij laat haar onderzoek starten in de jaren zeventig, de jaren van activisme binnen de vrouwenbeweging, gevolgd door de passieve jaren tachtig om te belanden bij de jaren negentig die gekenmerkt worden door ambivalentie en antipathie jegens het feminisme, aldus de auteur. Er is sinds de jaren zeventig werk gemaakt van de vertegenwoordiging van vrouwen in het hoger onderwijs. Veel beleidsverantwoordelijken zijn dan ook van mening dat de obstakels voor een volwaardige participatie van vrouwen binnen de universiteiten grotendeels opgeruimd zijn. De auteur wijst echter op de nog steeds bestaande verschillen tussen mannen en vrouwen op het vlak van hun loopbaan. Vrouwen vind je nog altijd te weinig terug in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Hoogleraren zijn veelal mannen, terwijl vrouwen meer de functie van assistent vervullen.
