Chose étonnante : une invitation à philosopher nous vient d'une autorité religieuse, la seule parmi toutes les grandes religions à se prononcer dans le sens de cette recommandation à travers le monde. D'une manière générale, le monde des philosophes a exprimé sa satisfaction à la parution de Fides et ratio, mais il pourrait s'agir là d'une politesse. Geste de révérence passagère, adhésion sans lendemain ? Il apparaît en effet qu'un certain nombre de philosophes catholiques éprouvent quelque gêne à entendre les suggestions du Saint-Siège. Celui-ci a beau se situer dans l'intention qui fut celle de Pierre : "Je vous écris [...] pour vous stimuler à la juste pensée " (2 P 3, 1), plusieurs sont décontenancés devant une conception de la philosophie qui suppose, pour être comprise, une familiarité non feinte avec la pensée de Thomas d'Aquin, présenté une fois de plus comme le guide des études. Elle supporte plus exactement une découverte de sa méthode. Bref, la parole de Jean-Paul II n'est pas de tout repos. À ce titre même elle mérite d'être entendue. Un philosophe lui fait écho ici, pour un large tour d'horizon critique.
