Designed for adults with learning disabilities, these two delightfully accessible books follow the experiences of five people with learning disabilities finding out about independence. Throughout the course of the books, the five adults, who share a house together, explore the kind of everyday situations which arise at work and home, whether in building relationships with other people or learning how to make decisions when dealing with common problems. The black and white illustrations help bring to life the characters involved and the topics raised. Both books can be read alone by adults with learning disabilities or with a carer and will prove ideal as a workshop or group resource.' - Disability Times 'Two useful books for older school leavers facing the future beyond school. They address difficult issues such as death, rejection, bullying, and sexual feelings. Short stories for students are followed with suggestions and activities teachers can use to help young people discuss and understand their feelings and behaviour.' - Times Educational Supplement Special Needs magazine These two books offer an enjoyable and accessible resource for people with a learning disability to improve their social skills. They are designed for adults with learning disabilities to read by themselves or with a carer, and comprise a series of stories about five people with learning disabilities who share a house together. Helping People with a Learning Disability Explore Choice focuses on decision-making. How can you make an informed choice when you have never had to decide anything for yourself? How can a carer help his or her client to a greater degree of self-sufficiency? Helping People with a Learning Disability Explore Relationships addresses topics such as friendships, bullying, loss, depression and romance. By following the continuing adventures of five friends, the books sustain the reader's interest while exploring important areas of learning. Illustrations by Tim Baker help the reader to engage imaginatively with the stories and the issues involved. Each story concludes with a section for the carer: a synopsis of topics covered and suggestions for developing them with the client. Thus, the books can be used in a multitude of ways: for adults with a learning disability to read on their own or with a carer as a teaching aid for carers as a resource for workshops, group work or drama sessions.

"Until recently, genetic, neuroanatomical, and psychological investigations on neurodevelopmental disorders were carried out independently. Now, tremendous advances across all disciplines have brought us toward a new scientific frontier: the integration of molecular genetics with a developmental cognitive neuroscience. The goal is to understand the basic mechanisms by which genes and environmental processes contribute to the development of specific structures and regions of the brain." "This handbook-style volume explores these advances from the perspective of developmental disorders in children."--Jacket.
