Abstract

ARIS (Architecture of Integrated Information Systems) is a unique and internationally renowned method for optimizing business processes and implementing application systems. This book enhances the proven ARIS concept by describing product flows and explaining how to classify modern software concepts. The importance of the link between business process organization and strategic management is stressed. Bridging the gap between the different approaches in business theory and information technology, the ARIS concept provides a full-circle approach - from the organizational design of business processes to IT implementation. Featuring SAP R/3 as well, real-world examples of various standard software solutions illustrate these concepts.

Abstract

This volume contains a collection of selected papers presented at the Symposium on Conceptual Modeling, which was held in Los Angeles, California, on December 2, th 1997, immediately before the 16 International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER’97), which was held at UCLA. A total of eighteen papers were selected for inclusion in this volume. These papers are written by experts in the conceptual modeling area and represent the most current thinking of these experts. This volume also contains the summaries of three workshops that were held on 6 7 December 1997, immediately after the ER’97 conference at UCLA. The topics of these three workshops are: • Behavioral Modeling • Conceptual Modeling in Multimedia Information Seeking • What Is the Role of Cognition in Conceptual Modeling? Since these topics are not only very important but also very timely, we think it is appropriate to include the summary of these three workshops in this volume. Those readers interested in further investigating topics related to the three workshops can either look up the individual paper published on the Web or contact the authors directly. The summary paper by Chen at the beginning of this volume also includes the summary of several interesting speeches at the Symposium.

Abstract

The Conference on Spatial Information Theory – COSIT – grew out of a series of workshops / NATO Advanced Study Institutes / NSF specialist meetings concerned with cognitive and applied aspects of representing large-scale space, particularly geographic space. In these meetings, the need for a well-founded theory of spatial information processing was identified. The COSIT conference series was established in 1993 as a biennial interdisciplinary European conference on the representation and processing of information about large-scale space, after a successful international conference on the topic had been organized by Andrew Frank et al. in Pisa, Italy, in 1992 (frequently referred to as ‘COSIT zero’). After two successful European conferences with strong North-American participation (COSIT ’93, held on the Island of Elba, Italy; COSIT ’95, held in Semmering, Austria), the conference became a truly international enterprise when COSIT ’97 was held in the Laurel Highlands, Pennsylvania, USA. COSIT ’99 will take place in Stade, Germany. All aspects of large-scale space, i. e. spaces too large to be seen from a single vantage point, are addressed in the COSIT conferences. These include spaces of geographic scale, as well as smaller spaces in which humans, animals, or autonomous robots have to find their way around. Spatial information theory also deals with the description of objects, processes, or events in spatial environments and it forms the foundation for the construction of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and for spatial information and communication system design in general.

Abstract

The first international workshop on Intelligent Agents for Telecommunications Applications (IATA’96) was held in July 1996 in Budapest during the XII European Conference on Artificial Intelligence ECAI’96. The workshop program consisted of technical presentations addressing agent based solutions in areas such as network architecture, network management, and telematic services. Presentations gave rise to a lively debate on the advantages and difficulties of incorporating agent technology in telecommunications. The proceedings were published by IOS Press providing introductory papers on agent technology as well as telecom applications and services and also papers about appropriate languages and development tools. The second International Workshop, IATA’98, was held in Paris, in the framework of Agents’ World which brought together the principal scientific and technical events on agent technology such as the International Conference on Multi Agent Systems (ICMAS’98), RoboCup’98 devoted to an international competition between soccer playing robot teams, and six international workshops. Each workshop focused on specific aspects of agent technology such as databases and information discovery on the Internet (CIA’98), Collective Robotics (CRW’98), Simulation (MABS’98), Agent Theories, Architectures and Languages (ATAL’98), Communityware (ACW’98), and Telecommunications Applications (IATA’98). The proceedings of IATA’98 were published by Springer Verlag.

Abstract

Truly personal handheld and wearable technologies should be small and unobtrusive and allow access to information and computing most of the time and in most circumstance. Complimentary, environment-based technologies make artifacts of our surrounding world computationally accessible and facilitate use of everyday environments as a ubiquitous computing interface. The International Symposium on Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing, held for the first time in September 1999, was initiated to investigate links and synergies in these developments, and to relate advances in personal technologies to those in environment-based technologies. The HUC 99 Symposium was organised by the University of Karlsruhe, in particular by the Telecooperation Office (TecO) of the Institute for Telematics, in close collaboration with ZKM Karlsruhe, which generously hosted the event in its truly inspiring Center for Arts and Media Technology. The symposium was supported by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the German Computer Society (Gesellschaft f r Informatik, GI) and held in cooperation with a number of special interest groups of these scientific societies. HUC 99 attracted a large number of paper submissions, from which the international programme committee selected 23 high-quality contributions for presentation at the symposium and for inclusion in these proceedings. In addition, posters were solicited to provide an outlet for novel ideas and late-breaking results; selected posters are also included with these proceedings. The technical programme was further complemented by four invited keynote addresses, and two panel sessions.

Abstract

The 3rd Eastern European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS’99) took place on 13-16- September 1999, in Maribor, Slovenia. It was organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMOD, the Moscow chapter of ACM SIGMOD, Slovenian Society Informatika, and the Slovenian Ministry of Technology. The aim of the ADBIS series of conferences is to provide a forum for the exchange of scientific achievements and experiences using innovative methods and approaches between the research communities of Central and Eastern Europe and the rest of the world in the area of databases and information systems. The 1999 conference continues the series of ADBIS events held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Poznan. The ADBIS steering committee has the ambition to make the ADBIS conference the premiere database and information systems conference in Central and Eastern Europe, to increase interaction and collaboration between researchers from East and West, and to provide an internationally recognized forum for the presentation of research and experiences in all aspects of modern database technology and information systems. To achieve these goals an international program committee selected 26 full research papers in a rigorous reviewing process from a total of 94 submissions from 33 different countries. This high number of submissions from so many different areas shows the truly worldwide recognition of and interest in the ADBIS series.
