Abstract

This text draws upon 'complex systems' thinking to introduce a policy-related integrative method for diagnosing and managing environmental change. This conveys how existing intellectual resources can be exploited to explore environmental decision issues without resoring to such devices as 'meta-methods' or 'meta-disciplines'.

Abstract

Threats to biodiversity, food shortages, urban sprawl, lessons for environmental problems that confront us today may well be found in the past. The archaeological record contains hundreds of situations in which societies developed long-term sustainable relationships with their environments, and thousands in which the relationships were destructive. The author demonstrates that much can be learned from an improved understanding of peoples who, through seemingly rational decisions, degraded their environments and threatened their own survival. By discussing archaeological case studies from around the world, from the deforestation of the Mayan lowlands to soil erosion in ancient Greece to the almost total depletion of resources on Easter Island, he reveals the long range coevolution of culture and environment and clearly shows the impact that ancient peoples had on their world. These case studies focus on four themes: habitat transformation and animal extinctions, agricultural practices, urban growth, and the forces that accompany complex society. They show that humankind's commitment to agriculture has had cultural consequences that have conditioned our perception of the environment and reveal that societies before European contact did not necessarily live the utopian existences that have been popularly supposed. Whereas most books on this topic tend to treat human societies as mere reactors to environmental stimuli, this volume shows them to be active participants in complex and evolving ecological relationships. This book demonstrates how archaeological research can provide unique insights into the nature of human stewardship of the Earth and can permanently alter the way we think about humans and the environment.

Abstract

This multidisciplinary book comprehensively describes one of the worst human-made environmental catastrophes of the twentieth century: the slow onset of incremental changes which affected the Aral Sea region and its peoples. It provides an important example of how to approach such disasters for students and researchers of environmental studies, global change, political science and history.

Abstract

The conquest of the Americas was the first step on the path to globalization. Today, 500 years later, we are rapidly approaching the prophesied global village and, consequently, natural and cultural uniformity. Amidst all the literature and discussion supporting globalization, Danilo J. Anton, argues against it. He demonstrates how diversity is necessary for both natural and cultural survival. He is not against progress, rather he illustrates how the "informatics revolution" can be used to promote public participation, capture traditional knowledge, and provide new methods for the defense of the natural environment.Diversidad, Globalizacion y los Caminos de la Naturaleza is the Spanish version of Diversity, Globalization, and the Ways of Nature.

Abstract

At the intersection of environmental science and human biology this book deals with dry ecosystems - aridity, droughts, wind and its influence on soils and regulation - the societies affected by these ecosystems, and the inventiveness of those living under these conditions. These environments are the basis of nomad existence, of irrigated agriculture and of the first civilisations dependent on streams. Changes in the modern epoch, the ever-increasing technology and demographic development show that environmental degradation and the socio-economic situation cannot be explained by just one factor. This book tries to answer the question whether long-lasting development is possible in dry environments.

Abstract

Since all-out interstate wars for the time being seem to belong to the past, con flict studies focus more and more on domestic conflicts. This is a broad field, not only because the arbitrary line between war and sub-war violence disap pears and the analyst is confronted with phenomena reaching from criminal violence and clashes between communities to violent conflicts of long duration and civil wars with massacres and genocides as their characteristics. It is also because there are so many different types of conflicts to be analyzed, so many different types of behavior to be studied, whereas there is often little informa tion available on what is really going on. Against the background of internal conflicts, which tend to be as protracted as diffuse in terms of time, intensity, actors, and their goals, this study aims to follow a specific pathway through the current thicket of violent circumstances. It focuses on causation patterns by exploring the causal role of the environ mental factor in the genesis of violent conflicts occurring today and probably even more so tomorrow. This approach, which for once does not focus on a specific level of the conflict system, on one area in the conflict geography, or on a specific category of actors, analyzes causation dynamics.
