This work presents a system of aesthetic diagnosis to achieve profile harmony while preserving the characteristics of the individual facial contour. Offered are acceptable ranges of variation in the vertical and sagittal directions for various facial types. The author's position is that each patient has an intrinsic harmonious form and that a Renaissance ideal should not be imposed; overall balance rather than perfection of specific features should be sought. The standards presented offer specific guidelines for the orthodontic or maxillo-facial specialist involved in aesthethic diagnosis.
