The telecommunications scene is changing rapidly as the global information society comes closer. Modern broadband networks make it feasible to interconnect distributed systems on a worldwide basis. But to realize a global information infrastructure that uses the capabilites of broadband interconnection to the full, cooperative telecommunications service management needs particular attention. This monograph is the final report of the European RACE II Research Project PREPARE, devoted to designing and implementing prototype telecommunications management systems over real testbeds. The excellent results presented are a major contribution to advancing the state of the art in the field and have been widely acknowledged by standards bodies, manufacturers, operators, service providers, and academics.

This monograph constitutes the final report of the EC-sponsored PRISM project, which was devoted to communications management for integrated broadband communications (IBC) within the RACE program. The book introduces and applies the distributed management framework (DMF) developed for the specification and design of multi-domain management systems for controlling, monitoring, and administrating IBC networks. The DMF framework is evaluated in detail and related to other international architectural and specification work aimed at creating advanced communication management systems. Also, a summary of existing platforms potentially supporting PRISM's DMF system, a glossary, a list of acronyms and abreviations, and a detailed subject index are included.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International COST 237 Workshop, held in Barcelona, Spain, in November 1996. The 15 revised full papers presented in the volume were carefully selected from a total of 34 submissions by COST project participants as well as from outside. The papers are organized in sections on multipeer and group communication, quality of service, applications and teleservices, multimedia protocols and platforms, and performance studies.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 1996 International Zurich Seminar on Digital Communications, IZS'96, held in Zurich, Switzerland, in February 1996 and focusing on broadband communications. The 26 revised papers were selected from a total of some 70 submissions and give a snapshot of the state of the art in broadband communications. The book is divided into sections on broadband network architectures, designing for quality of service guarantees, protocol support for multimedia/multipoint services, traffic modeling and performance evaluation, fairness in resource allocation, applications, server functions in ATM, satellite and wireless networks, broadband access and switching, and acceptance and congestion control.

This book of proceedings contains papers for the Second European Workshop on Mobile/Personal Satcoms (EMPS '96), held in Rome, Italy, and hosted by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. The EMPS '96 workshop follows the edition of two years ago, and is intended as an occasion for exchange of information and opinions among experts in the fast-growing field of mobile satellite communications. With respect to the first successful edition we only made one main modification. We issued a formal call for papers, instead oflimiting the selection process to invited papers as was in the past: 60 papers were received from 18 countries. Each paper has been reviewed by at least two referees, and then 41 papers were selected by the Workshop Steering Committee (WSC). An invited introductory lecture opens the workshop and is given by Dr. Andrew J. Viterbi, who is also honorary chairman of EMPS '96. Satellite Personal Communications Networks (SPCNs) are now expected to grow very fast, even beyond the most optimistic forecast: their unique feature to establish ex abrupto a world-wide communication fabric is certainly the winning card. Market analyses now indicate that LEO networks already planned to be operational around 1998 even risk being overwhelmed by users request, so that their extensions are already being considered. And, additionally, multimedia SPCNs are also being introduced at higher frequencies to provide broadband services.

This coherently structured and authorative text is the final report of the European Action COST 242, devoted to advancing research in the field of multiservice network design and performance evaluation. The excellent results presented are largely based on some 240 action reports compiled in cooperation between researchers from academia and professionals from industry and discussed during the COST 242 meetings. The 18 chapters of the book are divided into parts on traffic control in broadband networks, broadband network design, and traffic models and queueing analysis; also included is a bibliography listing 412 entries. This work essentially advances the state of the art in the area and is relevant to the international networking community at large.
