Jaarlijks komen zes miljoen toeristen naar Thailand die misbruik maken van 200.000 kinderen in de prostitutie. De auteur schreef dit boek na een reis doorheen Thailand waar hij diverse mensen- en kinderrechtenorganisaties bezocht die zich inzetten voor de verbetering van de positie van vrouwen en kinderen die werken in de toeristische seksindustrie. Het eerste deel van het boek is hiervan een verslag. Tevens poogt de auteur de economische en culturele achtergronden van kinderprostitutie in Thailand bloot te leggen.
Het tweede deel van het boek is volledig gewijd aan de omstreden figuur van wijlen John Stamford, stichter en uitgever van de Spartacusgids, een internationale homo-reisgids. Hamvraag ter discussie : is de Spartacusgids naast een gids voor homo's ook, via een systeem van codes, een gids ter promotie van een wereldwijd kinderprostitutienetwerk?
Tot slot wordt er stilgestaan bij het antwoord van de internationale politiek op kinderprostitutie en worden de inspanningen die Ecpat levert in de strijd tegen sekstoerisme en kinderprostitutie toegelicht.

De bijdragen in dit boek zijn toegespitst op de verhouding mensenrechten-vrouwenrechten. Naast een aantal teksten waarin die verhouding theoretisch uitgediept wordt, zijn er ook casussen uit verschillende landen, voornamelijk ontwikkelingslanden. In het theoretisch deel wordt erop gewezen dat mensenrechten die vooraf gemaakt zijn op mannenmodel en achteraf op vrouwen worden toegepast een probleem vormen. Klassieke mensenrechtenacties richten zich enkel op de publieke sfeer, waardoor problemen van vrouwen die zich dikwijls in de private sfeer bevinden genegeerd worden. Vandaar de eis, die ook op de Wereldconferentie van Peking gesteld werd, dat vrouwenrechten opgenomen dienen te worden in de mensenrechten.Daarnaast wordt ook stilgestaan bij de internationale context. Misdaden tegen vrouwen zijn minder zichtbaar in een internationale context, er is bijvoorbeeld wel sprake van genitale verminking in een land waar geen oorlog heerst of geen mensenrechten voor de rest geschonden worden met als gevolg een gebrek aan aandacht op het internationale forum. Ook de verhouding tussen cultureel bepaalde normen en waarden en universele vrouwenrechten blijft een moeilijk punt. Dient men rekening te houden met radicale verschillen tussen verschillende culturele settings of zijn de vrouwenrechten integendeel universeel? Verder wordt er ook nog aandacht besteed aan economische achteruitstelling en andere onderukkingsmechanismen zoals gebrek aan opleiding of aan politieke participatie.
