Ende der vierziger Jahre des 16. Jahrhunderts gab die Habsburgerin Maria von Ungarn, Schwester Karls V. und Statthalterin der Niederlande, den mythologischen Bildzyklus der «pene infernali» bei Tizian in Auftrag. Wie die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt, handelt es sich um einen dynastisch-politischen Auftrag zur propagandistischen Ausgestaltung der Feste, die anläßlich der Introduktion Philipps von Spanien, Sohn Karls V. und Nachfolgeanwärter des Kaisers, im Jahr 1549 auf Schloß Binche in den Niederlanden veranstaltet wurden. Untersucht werden die historischen, geistesgeschichtlichen und individuellen Bedingungen des Auftrags sowie die mit diesen Bedingungen konfrontierte Ästhetik Tizians.
