Alcohol is een seksespecifiek probleem. Vrouwen drinken om andere redenen dan mannen en de gevolgen van drankgebruik zijn ook verschillend. Klassiek is het voorbeeld van de geïsoleerde huisvrouw die 's ochtends de sherryfles uit het gootsteenkastje tevoorschijn haalt - moderner het verschijnsel van de carrièrevrouw die op haar werk overeind moet zien te blijven in een mannenwereld en thuis niet de steun geniet die voor manhen zo vanzelfsprekend is. Er is verder een duidelijk sekse gebonden relatie tussen alcohol aan de ene kant en geweld, seksueel misbruik en sociale stigmatisering aan de andere kant. Drank is een aantrekkelijk middel om aan stress te ontsnappen. Maar wanneer het gebruik uit de hand loopt, dreigen de onderliggende problemen uit het zicht te verdwijnen. In de vrouwenhulpverlening is het inzicht gegroeid dat het nuttig is niet alleen naar het drankmisbruik zelf te kijken maar ook naar het waarom: men grijpt niet voor niets naar de fles.
