It was through Staël's best-seller De l'Allemagne that the term 'Romanticism', coined in Germany, reached Europe and America. Around this term, Staël built a new and universal agenda: her manifesto offered Napoleon's Europe an alternative to everything he stood for. The new universe she revealed helped to bury the neo-Classical world and to shape the nineteenth century. In this important work, Dr Isbell reasserts Staël's place in history and analyses her vast agenda, which covers every Classical and Romantic divide in art, philosophy, religion, and society from 1789 to 1815. La philosophie allemande a toujours eu en France une réelle influence. Toutefois, celle-ci a varié en intensité selon les époques et s’est exercée parfois avec un décalage important, mais elle a pu aussi se manifester dans des dimensions de la culture en général moins connues du public philosophique. Un colloque international, tenu à Lille en 1991 dans le cadre des accords entre les universités de Halle et de Lille et organisé par le Centre Éric Weil, s’est donné pour objet d’approfondir ce thème en retenant trois grandes périodes, le début du xixe siècle, la fin du xixe et le début du xxe, la période contemporaine. Ce volume rassemble les contributions, de façon interdisciplinaire, d’éminents spécialistes, étrangers et français, de la culture allemande. Ces études analysent la manière dont la pensée allemande, sur une durée de deux siècles, a été approchée, assimilée, interprétée. Elles présentent différentes facettes d’une réception souvent positive, parfois négative et examinent comment se sont effectuées, de la lente prise de contact des Idéologues avec une pensée, celle de Kant, qu’ils étaient peu préparés à comprendre jusqu’à l’irruption de Heidegger dans le contexte français, différentes modalités de ce rapport, du simple contact à une véritable réappropriation.

The setting is 1920s Berlin, cultural heart of Europe and the era's only serious cinematic rival to Hollywood. In his engaging study, Thomas Saunders explores an outstanding example of one of the most important cultural developments of this century: global Americanization through the motion picture. The invasion of Germany by American films, which began in 1921 with overlapping waves of sensationalist serials, slapstick shorts, society pictures, and historical epics, initiated a decade of cultural collision and accommodation. On the one hand it fueled an impassioned debate about the properties of cinema and the specter of wholesale Americanization. On the other hand it spawned unprecedented levels of cooperation and exchange. In Berlin, American motion pictures not only entertained all social classes and film tastes but also served as a vehicle for American values and a source of sharp economic competition. Hollywood in Berlin correlates the changing forms of Hollywood's contributions to Weimar culture and the discourses that framed and interpreted them, restoring historical contours to a leading aspect of cultural interchange in this century. At the same time, the book successfully embeds Weimar cinema in its contemporary international setting.
