Een kleine portrettengalerij met de bijbelse figuren Kaïn, Isaäk, Saul, Job, Jona, Jezus en Maria Magdalena als hoofdpersonen dient als basis voor het commentaar op de verhalen waarin zij figureren. Deze verhalen worden door Jaap Goedegebuure geconfronteerd met het beeld dat romanciers en dichters erop hebben gebaseerd.
