Abstract

In this monograph, the student will find a comprehensive presentation not just of every preliminary scheme but of the working drawings, and construction sketches documenting field changes. It is remarkable how in the instant the final form emerged, Venturi's supernaturally beautiful pencil presentation drawing style was suddenly beside the point. The move towards construction is utterly decisive. Pay close attention and you can see an artist of the first order making visual adjustments as the building takes shape during construction. The achieved building was better than the drawn building. The very best architects work this way, and always have: their buildings are not fully _designed_ until they are fully built under their own supervision. It was true of Inigo Jones. It is true of Robert Venturi.
