Abstract

In this book attention is paid to theoretical concepts which can have and to some extent already have a guiding function in the practice of child and youth care, and which offer leads to improve the quality of care. These concepts are: social competence, social support, and social climate. Stimulating social competence is considered one of the main objectives during the residential treatment process. Therefore, this volume gives starting-points on how to enlarge the social skills of children and young people in care. Individuals can generally cope with difficult situations or personal problems when they get enough support from their social environment. In this book special attention is paid to two aspects of social support: the external social network of juveniles and the social climate in the residential care setting itself.
