Haemorrhagic and ischaemic lesions of the brain during the perinatal period are a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the preterm and fullterm infant. The association between these lesions and the development of cerebral palsy has been recognised for several decades but, until recently, these lesions could only be diagnosed at autopsy. The advent of CT scanning and then ultrasound imaging of the newborn brain made the diagnosis of brain lesions possible during life. The purpose of this important new atlas is to illustrate the way in which ultrasound, together with clinical assesment, electrophysiological studies, CT and magnetic resonance imaging have helped in the diagnosis, assessment and prognosis of lesions of the newborn brain.
