With this volume we are commemorating - albeit somewhat belatedly - the 600th anniversary of the death of Louis I of Anjou, one of the most respected kings of Hungary (1342-1382), and the only Hungarian monarch known already in his lifetime as "Louis the Great". Hungary had saintly kings like Stephan I (997/1000-1116), and just, powerful and beloved kings like Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490), but only Louis of Anjou has ever been accorded the surname "the Great". King Louis the Great was at once a chivalrous medieval knight, an empire builder on the model of Charlemagne, and a learned, gentle and pious monarch. During the height of his power, Louis's empire included the Kingdom of Hungary (including Croatia and Transylvania) with its associated provinces in the Balkans, the Kingdom of Poland, and for a while even segments of the Kingdom of Naples in Southern Italy. Although a conqueror of people and of kingdoms, Louis was so concerned with personal honor that on one occasion he even challenged Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, to a personal duel for allegedly having offended the honor of his (Louis's) mother. Yet this same fighting, dueling and conquering monarch was also responsible for establishing Hungary's first university in 1367 (the University of Pécs, founded nineteen years after the University of Prague and nineteen years before the University of Heidelberg) and for introducing Italian and French cultural influences into Hungary. Like all men and all rulers, King Louis also had his shortcomings ; not the least of these being his propensity to become involved in mahor wars over petty, often personal, matters. Yet, notwithstanding his shortcomings, in retrospect the Age of Louis the Great still stands as one of the really great periods in the history of a nation (the Magyars) whose history since the 16th century is more awash with tragedies and misfortunes than with triumphs and national achievements.
