De quel mystère diabolique le fromage est-il le coeur ? La pomme symbolise-t-elle la volupté charnelle ou la perfection ? Combien d'années peut-on vivre en se nourrissant exclusivement de racines ? Que découvre-t-on dans les abysses et les recoins des corps livrés à la dissection ? Sous ces questions en apparence hétéroclites, se dessinent peu à peu les contours d'une anthropologie à l'âge baroque. A peu près aveugle à la science naissante, peu soucieuse en tout cas de s'y confronter, elle s'organise à travers des catégories duelles qui laissent le champ libre à l'imaginaire débridé du temps : le haut et le bas, le bon et le mauvais, le pourri et le sain, le puant et le parfumé. Piero Camporesi retrace le cercle de cette anthropologie - comme il le fait de la théologie dans l'Enfer et le Fantasme de l'hostie (Hachette, 1989) -, explorant successivement les grandes questions que l'imagination baroque a privilégiées : l'alimentation, et donc la diète, la dissection, la terre... Dans un style flamboyant, commentant des textes qu'il excelle à exhumer, l'historien italien fait revivre sous nos yeux une culture disparue, mais non pas morte. Piero Camporesi est professeur de littérature italienne à l'université de Bologne. Historique, spécialisée dans la culture populaire ou l'art culinaire et pratiquant l'exégèse de texte enfouis mais sublimes, son oeuvre, déjà partiellement traduite en français (La Chair impassible, Le Pain sauvage), connaît un rayonnement croissant. British artists from Hollar to Ruskin excelled in the art of the watercolour. In its delicate strength they found the perfect medium in which to express a growing response to Nature and their environment. Artists such as Sandby, Girtin, Turner, and Cotman travelled in search of romantic landscapes, picturesque ruins and dramatic urban skylines, visiting places as diverse as the Yorkshire moors, Norwich, Venice and Rome. Over 140 of their finest watercolours are reproduced here in full colour and discussed in detailed notes.
